The Cumberland County Commission approved funding $25,000 to go toward the extension of a water line to offer a public water supply at the Big Lick Convenience Center.
The county will aid South Cumberland Utility District (SCUD) with the funding. The total cost of the project is estimated at $97,000.
SCUD has agreed to incorporate the supply of water to the convenience center as part of the improvements to the Rhea Rd. extension line.
Officials with SCUD and Cumberland County said this will allow other customers in the general area to tie into the water line as well.
"This is making good on a promise we made to these folks a while ago and I'm glad it's going to be able to be worked out," 3rd District Commisiioner Lynn Tollett said.
A motion to approve the funding was made by 3rd District Johnny Presley and was supported by 7th district Commisioner Mike Harvel. The motion was unanimously approved.
In other areas the commission approved:
• $30,000 be placed into the building and maintenance departments' budget to cover the cost of filling in the problem areas at the Community Complex. The improved areas will also allow for more parking near the complex.
• State grant money in the amount of $15,789 was approved for anti-smoking programs at the Cumberland County Health Department.
• A state grant of $53,379 of flow-through money was approved for the Workforce Development program.
• An $18,000 state grant was also approved for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department for in-car digital video cameras.
• $7500 was approved to sponsor the 2008 Tennessee Women’s Open Golf Championship. The funds will come from the county's undesignated fund balance.
• Funds of $14,500 will be moved from the county fund balance after an insurance recovery settlement involving a trash compactor at the county landfill was reached. The county received $70,000 in insurance recovery. The total amendment was $84,500 for the purchase of solid waste equipment at the Cumberland County landfill.
Commissioner Jeff Brown, 8th District, did not attend the meeting.
