Woman who danced while child was left in car seat indicted

By Michael R. Moser / mmoser@crossville-chronicle.com

A Crossville woman who police pulled off the dance floor at a local nightspot after finding her infant child strapped in a car seat in near-freezing temperatures has been indicted by the Cumberland County Grand Jury.

Leaha Chantel Richardson, 24, who at the time of her original arrest listed a Primrose Court address, was indicted on the single charge of child abuse/neglect as a result of the Jan. 5 incident.

Around midnight on that date Crossville Police responded to complaints of a child being left in a 2002 Dodge Voyager in the parking lot of Mr. Ed's off West Ave. Complaints reportedly came from the establishment and persons walking by the van who spotted the child.

The ten-month-old child had been left in the van with temperatures hovering around freezing, with no one around the vehicle.

Police entered the nightspot and found Richardson on the dance floor. They questioned her shortly and then called for an ambulance because of what they said was Richardson's intoxicated state. Richardson refused to go to the hospital and was taken to the Justice Center where she was booked on the neglect and abuse charge.

Emergency custody was given to the grandparents to take the child home and the Department of Children's Services was contacted.

The grand jury took action on other cases as listed below. All are to appear for arraignment, unless otherwise noted, on March 17.
