An early morning fire that was probably started as a result of smoking in bed has left a family of four homeless. No one was injured in the early morning fire on Darrell Ave.
Crossville firefighters arrived at the scene around 3:30 a.m. to find family members running from the burning structure and discovered flames in two side bedrooms and quickly spreading through the house. Acting fire chief Chris South said firefighters were able to black the fire out but not before it had spread through the most of the house. The structure suffered heavy smoke damage in areas that did not see fire damage.
"They were fortunate to have gotten out without anyone getting hurt and we were able to knock the fire down pretty fast once we got on the scene. The guys did a good job," said South.
Home at the time were Tim and Marie Brittain. They shared their home with sons Andrew and Tyler, both age 17.
The fire department found that the fire started in the parents' bedroom.
The Cumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the scene to offer assistance to the victims.
