A rural Cumberland County woman escaped from her burning home Sunday night but lost everything to the fast moving fire, the Cumberland County Fire Department reported.
Flames had completely enveloped the residence of Mary Jo Keith of Wolf Creek Rd. by the time firefighters were able to reach the remote scene, Fire Chief Jeff Dodson confirmed. "About the only thing we could do is protect a nearby structure and keep the fire from spreading into the woods," Dodson said.
Keith said she was in her home when she heard noises coming from a room that had a "pot belly stove." She said she looked in and saw flames racing to the ceiling in the area of the stove. She rushed out and called E-911 to get help. At least one of her four dogs did not make it out of the residence. No one was injured in the incident.
Firefighters were on the scene for over an hour.
The Cumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the scene to offer assistance to the victim.
