Sgt. Larry Pugh with the Crossville Police Department demonstrates the proper way to install a child safety seat in a vehicle during the child seat safety checkpoint held Wednesday at Dave Kirk Automotive. Officers at the event said common mistakes parents and others make when installing a child safety seat include not making the restraints tight enough or having the shoulder straps too high, having the seat in the wrong position or using the wrong type of car seat. Remember, children under age four should not be in a booster seat and that safety seats have a five-year expiration. Be cautious when buying a used seat. It may have been in an accident or be expired. If you have questions, Lt. Fred Sherrill said you may stop by the Crossville Police Department. Car seat checkpoints are held once a month at different locations. For more information, call 484-7231.
