James Taylor Callis, M.D., Colonel, 79, passed away peacefully at home Oct. 3, 2008. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Bilbrey Funeral Home with a service afterward. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Crossville City Cemetery.


Dr. Callis graduated salutatorian of Ridgely High School, then went to Vanderbilt University, where he was a member of the Honor Council, Skull and Bones and ATO Fraternity. He went on to the University of Tennessee Medical School. After graduation, he interned in Memphis and Tulsa. He served two years as medical officer for a destroyer division before making his home in Crossville, where he helped form the Crossville Medical Group.


He served in the Tennessee Army National Guard, retiring as a full colonel. He served on the board of Tansi Community Church, worked with the Gideons and traveled widely with his wife, Barbara.


Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Barbara; children, Cathy Bilbrey (Robert), Sandy Sturgeon (Jeff), Karis Adams (Jeff), Jim Callis (Maira) and Charlie Callis; sister, Nancy Burnett (Robert); five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.


The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to "The Circle of Friends Library Fund," c/o Irene Swafford, First National Bank, TN.
