Card sharks deal for Hospice

CROSSVILLE — A Card Party was held on Saturday, February 23, at the Thunderbird Recreation Center to benefit Hospice of Cumberland County. For a $10 donation, attendees were served lunch, entered into a drawing for door prizes and had an entire afternoon of friendship, fellowship and fun while supporting a great cause.

Players were decked out like casino dealers with cards, dominoes, automatic shufflers and a healthy dose of competitiveness playing Hand and Foot, Bridge, Skip Bo, Russian Bank and Rummy-O.

“We had a successful turnout considering many of our members are out of town this time of year,” said Brenda Toodle, president of the Lake Tansi Hospice Auxiliary, Hospice of Cumberland County board member and card playing enthusiast who won two games. “Hospice of Cumberland County is unlike any other because it is the only non-profit hospice. We don’t turn anyone in need of hospice care away.”

Hospice of Cumberland County is supported by the Lake Tansi Hospice Auxiliary and the Fairfield Glade Hospice Auxiliary. It is the only non-profit hospice in the area. As such, they rely heavily on the auxiliary committees to create fundraising events so they can continue providing care for those in need, regardless of whether or not those patients are insured.

“Hospice is so very important to support, and all the money stays right here in Cumberland County to help our community,” said Helen Davis playing an encouraging hand of Hand and Foot.  Davis’ contender, Gladys Butler added, “And one day we might even need it.”

Elbow deep in a six player nail-biter, Joy Ernst said, “Cards are fun and challenging and this is a really good fund raiser. Hospice is an excellent program. And friends get the opportunity to spend the day together.”

  • Welcome 1.jpg Lake Tansi welcomes new recreation director

A lot of people have visited Cumberland County, liked what they saw and eventually bought a house. Can Betty Gates be included in that group? Well, yes and no.  She came to Cumberland County to visit her brother who had retired from the United States Air Force. He took her on a tour of the area, including a drive through Tansi on Dunbar Rd. One of his neighbors, a real estate agent, also took her on a tour where he showed her a number of houses, one of which she bought. It was just two days after she arrived at her brother’s house. Here’s how she described the moment: “I have landed on my mountain.”  That was near the end of 2008.

Joann Kelso’s nursing career began when she went to nursing school on a grant in Cleveland, Ohio. The grant allowed her to acquire her degree but, in return, she was obligated to work in Cleveland for two years. By this time her friends were settling down, getting married, and having babies. Kelso decided that wasn’t what she wanted at that time and enlisted in the Navy.
