Tailgating for the biggest game of the year

CROSSVILLE — On Feb. 2, Super Bowl Sunday, Lake Tansi held a tailgate party for residents to watch the big game on the big screen. The impending battle between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII was met with great anticipation and little hope that Bronco quarterback and Tennessee Vols darling, Peyton Manning, would be able to lead the team and come home with a Super Bowl ring.

The festivities began at 3 p.m. Stephanie Tanksley, with the Recreation Department, opened the pool tables, laid out sandwiches and popcorn, and set the big screen to Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl X until the game started.

Several couples came to watch the game and, of course, the commercials. Setting the tone for the game, Seattle won the coin toss but chose instead to send its defense on the field. Twelve seconds after kickoff, Broncos center, Manny Ramirez, snapped the ball well after Manning had sounded the cadence and sent the ball into the end zone giving the Seahawks an immediate lead with a two-point safety. This play was the quickest score in Super Bowl history.

While the gentlemen soaked up the plays, their ladies chatted, crocheted and asked questions like, “What’s pass interference?”

By half time, the Seahawks led the Broncos 22-0. Considering the game to be a wash, several tailgaters decided to call it a night. Several began playing pool, only looking up at the scoreboard every so often. The half time show consisted of performances by Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, thought by many to have been the highlight of the entire game.

Because Seattle deferred, the Seahawks resumed possession at the top of the second half and returned the kick for another touchdown and extra point, ironically, within the first 12 seconds. The Seahawks soared over the Broncos 29-0.

The Broncos were plagued with miscommunications, interceptions, turnovers, and a fumble, but finally regained enough composure to get on the board in the bottom of the third. The fourth quarter started with the Seahawks leading the Broncos 36-8, so the Seahawks wouldn’t be able to call this game a complete shut out. Nevertheless, Seattle scored, yet again, in the fourth quarter concluding their strong Super Bowl XLVIII win over the Broncos 43-8.

Tansi residents were grateful to have a facility open for them to come together and watch the Super Bowl. The fact that it fell on  Feb. 2 made a trifecta of celebration for Super Bowl Sunday, Groundhog Day and Stephanie Tanksley’s birthday. Since the Super Bowl was only super to some and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, attendees were more than willing to share in the joy of Tanksley’s birthday. The Recreation Department is always in service to the Lake Tansi community and opens the Thunderbird to share with its residents. For upcoming events or more information call 788-6282.

  • An independence celebration to remember

There was no event left out and not one person who couldn’t be entertained as Lake Tansi created a weekend long soirée to celebrate Independence Day this year. The large crowd of visitors provided ample participation for friendly competitions in ping pong, horseshoes, mini golf, shuffleboard, badminton, sack races, sandcastle building, and pie eating. While Perfect Party Rentals’ bouncy houses juggled little children, the beach accommodated sun-loving families and friends, and the car show brought dozens of classic and souped-up coups for the crowds to peruse.

  • POA looks to end year ahead of budget

This summer has been outstanding here at Lake Tansi. It is a great time of year to live in and visit our wonderful resort. Our lakes have been busy. The cabins, golf course and Recreation Department have been running full bore, as well, with many activities. Our 4th of July weekend was the best we had in years – thanks to the weather – from the Cruise-in, music and movies at the beach, right down to the pie-eating contest and all the other activities held. Next year will be bigger and better yet.

  • LT Police Cruiser.jpg Security upgrades patrol vehicle

The Lake Tansi Department of Security and Law Enforcement has acquired a replacement patrol vehicle. It is a 2008 Chevrolet Trail Blazer with 46,500 miles. It is replacing a 2001 Chevrolet Impala with approximately 250,000 miles. The new patrol vehicle will be placed in service as soon as it is fitted with the necessary safety and emergency equipment.  It is being equipped by On Duty Depot in Knoxville, TN. The Trail Blazer is
better suited for service in the Tansi Community than the vehicle it is replacing because it has available four wheel drive which will enable officers to respond in inclement weather.
