Fun and games on Memorial Day at the Thunderbird

CROSSVILLE — Everyone is looking forward to Memorial Day, otherwise known as opening day for Lake Tansi. With it, Memorial Day will bring the onset of warm weather, vacationing and will set the tone for the Thunderbird Recreation Center, where children’s activities will abound under the direction of Stephanie Tanksley. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.- noon, Tanksley will be teaching and assisting children of all age groups with crafts. From noon - 2 p.m., she will have the children involved in competitive games and activities outside (weather permitting).

“I’m excited,” said Tanksley. “I’m learning a lot of techniques and applications and getting to be creative while gathering ideas that are fun and inspiring for the children’s activities.”

Tanksley, who has worked for two years in the Game Room of the Thunderbird Recreation Center, is encouraged by the opportunity to be the director of children’s activities this year. She has several unique ideas about how to keep the kids engaged and entertained all summer long. A few of her crafting sessions will include many different and age-appropriate types of handi-crafts, such as sand art, tie-dye, bug catchers and even the trendy, Pinterest inspired “Galaxy Wear.”

“I am looking forward to sharing the crafts I have chosen for each age group,” Tanksley said. “I wanted to make sure to include children of all ages from toddler to teen.”

The schedule will generally be crafting on Mondays and Tuesdays so they will be ready for pickup with the option to do a small craft on Thursdays. This is especially convenient for timeshare visitors who often only stay for a week; children will be able to complete and pick up their crafts before they depart.

Aside from arts and crafts, other children’s activities include the outdoor sessions, contests, competitive games, and the like. Hole-in-one, putt-putt, hula-hoops, and more will surely be an extra reason to stay and play in Tansi starting Memorial Day.

For more information call Director of Children’s Activities Stephanie Tanksley at 931-337-6159 or Ken and Michelle at the Thunderbird Recreation Center at 788-6282.

  • Welcome 1.jpg Lake Tansi welcomes new recreation director

A lot of people have visited Cumberland County, liked what they saw and eventually bought a house. Can Betty Gates be included in that group? Well, yes and no.  She came to Cumberland County to visit her brother who had retired from the United States Air Force. He took her on a tour of the area, including a drive through Tansi on Dunbar Rd. One of his neighbors, a real estate agent, also took her on a tour where he showed her a number of houses, one of which she bought. It was just two days after she arrived at her brother’s house. Here’s how she described the moment: “I have landed on my mountain.”  That was near the end of 2008.

Joann Kelso’s nursing career began when she went to nursing school on a grant in Cleveland, Ohio. The grant allowed her to acquire her degree but, in return, she was obligated to work in Cleveland for two years. By this time her friends were settling down, getting married, and having babies. Kelso decided that wasn’t what she wanted at that time and enlisted in the Navy.
