Lake Tansi Auxiliary supports Hospice of Cumberland County

CROSSVILLE — Hospice of Cumberland County sends a giant “thank you” to the Lake Tansi Auxiliary for their $3,025 donation.

“Because Hospice of Cumberland County  has a 'don’t say no' policy, we rely on donations like this. We feel very blessed to receive this donation which allows us to give back to individuals in our communtiy that need our service,” said Emily Hayes, volunteer coordinator for Hospice of Cumberland County.

Hospice of Cumberland County helps is all about "adding life to days." The nurses, caregivers and staff all work to take the focus of a person's illness and direct it towards quality of life and comfort, not just for the patient but the family, as well.

The actual word Hospice means a house of rest or shelter, a place to be taken care of and at peace. The concept of hospice care has been around for thousands of years and is where the terms hostess, hospital and hospitality are rooted.

Medicare approved the specialized healthcare in 1983 and called it "hospice care." A few years later, it was decided this care was needed in Cumberland County. Hospice of Cumberland County was formed in 1986, caring for individuals in the community in the last six months of their lives.

Hospice of Cumberland County operates Cumberland House, the community's only residential hospice facility that provides special services in home-like suites. Hospice also covers all equipment, medication, supplies, personnel cost and nurse or physician visits.

The Lake Tansi Auxiliary raises money for Hospice in a variety of ways, from card parties, craft shows and even ice cream socials. Keep your eyes open for their next event. Helping them raise money means helping an individual in the community get the care they need.

Ken Taylor, executive director of Hospice of Cumberland County, commented, “The Lake Tansi Hospice Auxiliary and their friends in and around their community have been instrumental in us being able to provide an average of $34,000 a year of complimentary services to families and patients who do not have insurance or other ways of paying for this much needed specialized medical care. To us, it is a blessing; to patients and families, it is an answer to prayers.”

The Lake Tansi Hospice Auxiliary meets the first Friday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Thunderbird Recreation Center, and prospective members are encouraged to attend. To learn more about Hospice of Cumberland County or the Lake Tansi Hospice Auxiliary, please contact Hayes at 484-4748.
