The Lake Tansi Community Association held their monthly meeting June 17 at 6 p.m. at the Thunderbird Recreation Center.
The program for the evening was presented by Kristin Morris, executive director of Kids on the Rise. This program means a great deal to her, as she was one of these “kids.” Mentors work with children one-on-one and try to teach about life, goals and perseverance. They work on all aspects of youth development to give these students a sense of self worth. Mentoring is very important and plays a very big part in each of their lives. Each mentor is matched with a child, and there is a great need for male mentors for the boys. There is a waiting list for Cumberland County children in grades 2- 5. Many of these children come from single parent homes and just need a little extra attention. Mentors sign up for one hour a week, plus two monthly activities. Kids on the Rise will pay for the background checks and there is a three-hour training class to help you on your way.
There is also a need for readers. Each volunteer will usually read for 30 minutes to 1 hour a week to an entire class for their story time. If you are interested in this program, please contact Joyce Ferry at 788-1828 for information.
Next month’s meeting will be on July 15 at 6 p.m. at the Thunderbird. The program for the evening will be presented by Ken Steadman of the Lions Club, along with Donna Taylor and her seeing eye dog, Norman. Please plan on coming.
If you have friends or you know of people who are new to Lake Tansi, or long-timers for that matter, don’t forget to invite them to participate with members in the community association. They meet on the third Tuesday of each month. To join this wonderful Lake Tansi organization, just contact Joyce Ferry at 788-1828 after 6 p.m. Membership dues are only $6 per person or $12 per couple per year.
