The Lake Tansi Community Association held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 18, at 6 p.m. at the Thunderbird Recreation Center. In charge of the decorations were Mary Lou and Rich Holton, Betty and Roger Quast and Cheryl and Tracy Scrimsher.
Jim Bridges gave the invocation. Following the invocation, Sally English led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Community Association members with birthdays and/or anniversaries in March were recognized and also first time members and visitors were welcomed. Table numbers were then called and everyone shared in the bountiful and delicious food provided by the members.
The program for the evening was “Spring Gardening” with Bob Washburn from Wolf River Valley Growers, Pall Mall, TN. This has been a family owned and operated business for 20+ years and is located 10 miles north of Jamestown. Washburn had a wealth of information in his presentation. A few of the “helpful hints” include prune your roses when the forsythia blooms; wait a bit for lawn fertilizer — should be applied for the first time in mid-April and again in mid-September; prune your shrubs 2-3 weeks after they stop blooming. Try to use less poison on your lawns and plants. These poisons are killing off the pollinators, such as the butterflies, honeybees and hummingbirds. If you would like more information, their Web site is www.wolfriver.net or you call them at 1-800-841-5210.
Gary recognized several members for their contributions to their community. First was Ray Carpenter. In 2001, Ray was instrumental in forming the Tansi phone book. In 2007 Les and Judi Elam took over as co-chairs and are doing a great job. The cover is designed by Larry Robertson. A lot of work goes into this project and the residents of Tansi appreciate everything they do.
Les and Judi also are co-chairs of the “Exchange Club Road Gang.” Once a month a group of volunteers pick up trash from War Eagle to Brown Elementary School. Accolades to Gary Rabuck who also cleans up nearly 14 miles of other roadways.
On March 29, Judi Elam and June Zettlemeyer will be participating in a fundraiser for St. Jude Hospital. It is “Saddle Up For St. Jude” and will be held at the Wildwood Stable in Fairfield Glade. Lunch will be served at the stable for a $5 donation. For more information or to make a pledge, call either Judi Elam at 788-1300 or June Zettelmeyer at 788-5022.
On March 29 and 30, Cumberland County will be having a “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans” celebration. There will be two full days of entertainment with a lot of good music. There will also be some Native American entertainment and special guest will be legendary songwriter Chris Gentry. Admission is free to all events and will be held at the Cumberland County Community Complex. For more information, you can contact Larry Troxell at 788-5443 or at Classic Realty, 484-2600.
On April 4, from 7-10 p.m., there will be a benefit dance for the Bailey family of Crossville. Mr. Bailey has a very rare disease and is quite ill. There are three young children in this family and this fundraiser will enable the family to travel to Disney World. The dance will be held in the Fairfield Glade Multi Purpose Building. Come and enjoy the music of Frank Byars. The cost is $5/single or $10/couple. Please plan on coming out for this very worthwhile event. If you have questions or need more information, please contact Dave Dougherty at 707-2676 or Kari Rockwell at 200-1771.
The Crossville Elks will have a dinner dance and silent auction to raise money for the “KIDS on the Rise” mentor program. The mentors work one-on-one with the children. There are presently 40+ children in that program. Also, the storybook readers read to whole classes. This fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 16, at a cost of $25 per person. For more information, please contact Rich Holton at 788-5925 or any other member of the Elks.
Next month’s meeting will be on April 15 at 6 p.m. at the Thunderbird. The program for the evening will be presented by “T” Shurmer of Family Ties Restaurant. “T” has a beautiful voice and will perform several songs for everyone.
If you have friends or you know of people who are new to Lake Tansi, or long-timers for that matter, don’t forget to invite them to participate in the Community Association. They meet on the third Tuesday of each month. To join this wonderful Lake Tansi organization, just contact Gary Rabuck at 788-1748 after 6 p.m. Membership dues are only $6 per person or $12 per couple per year. Please plan on joining.
