Passenger critical after being shot in face; driver faces charges

A North Carolina man remains in a trauma unit at a Chattanooga hospital and a second man remains jailed in the Putnam County Jail following a shooting incident that occurred somewhere near the Cumberland and Putnam County line on I-40 near Monterey, according to reports.

Cumberland County Sheriff's Investigator Ben Waller said at deadline today that authorities are uncertain as to just what happened leading up to the shooting, or even which county the incident took place. Because of this, Waller and Putnam County Sheriff's Investigator Michael Hoover are working together on the investigation.

Darious Jamall Andrews, 22, Robersonville, NC, is charged with a single count of aggravated assault and remains jailed in Cookeville while investigators sort things out. The victim was identified as Hiezen Abbas, 50, also of Robersonville, NC. He was rushed to the Monterey High School baseball field by Putnam County Ambulance Service and then flown to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga where he remains hospitalized, unable to communicate with investigators at this time.

Abbas was shot one time in the face, according to reports.

Monterey Police were dispatched to the Monterey Shell station just off I-40 Monday around 7:40 p.m. and arrived to find a man sitting on the sidewalk in front of the car wash with a second man standing over him. It was after police arrived that authorities realized the victim had actually been shot.

Andrews told police more than one version of what had happened as the two traveled west bound through Cumberland County and into Putnam County in a Jeep Cherokee. In one version he told authorities that he was in the fast lane when a vehicle pulled beside him, he heard a pop sound and then noticed his passenger bleeding from the head. He told investigators this happened as he passed a highway sign that read, "Entering Putnam County."

In another version he told police he was handling the weapon when it discharged.

Reportedly, police recovered a .22 caliber handgun from the Shell station restroom.

The incident remains under investigation.
