CROSSVILLE — The Fairfield Glade Lions Club has been honoring Stone Memorial and Cumberland County High School “Students of the Month” for the past several years. The Phoenix School has been added to the selection for the first time this school year. Therefore, four students will be honored from SMHS and CCHS and two from The Phoenix School during the 2012-'13 school year.

The Phoenix School is a very special institution for about 136 students from kindergarten to 12th grade. There are 15 teachers that work with these students. The mission of the school: ”Inspire students to be lifelong learners, positive role models and productive citizens of a diverse world.”

Whitney Sheffield is the first student to be selected by Counselor Breanna Van Winkle for this honor. The FFG Lions Club has designated her to be the December “Student of the Month.”

Whitney is an excellent student and has her sights set on a very ambitious career. Her school activities include Family and Consumer Science. Her hobbies are sewing, watching football, horse back riding, swimming, playing volleyball and hanging out with friends. Her very ambitious future plans and goal is to attend college to become a neonatal nurse, a very special profession that cares for newborn infants.

The Fairfield Glade Lions Club is very proud to be in partnership with the Cumberland County School System in the “Student of the Month” Program. Lion Chairman Bob Cover commented, "We are thankful that the school counselors make the student selections. All we have to do is decide on the month. We are only sorry that we have to limit the program to one student per month. Our scholarship Fund is $6,000 and the 10 students have an opportunity at the end of the school year to be awarded a meaningful amount to enter into the higher education level. A Lions appointed committee works in concert with the school counselors to select the final scholarship winners and amounts.”

Much hope and many prayers go with each “Student of the Month” as they go forward in their search for new careers and success.
