What can be better than “The Sounds of Christmas” to begin the holiday season? Brian Bacon and the Cumberland Brass Ensemble will perform on Wednesday, Dec. 5, for the Fairfield Glade Ladies Club holiday luncheon and meeting. Get out your holiday sweaters and be ready for a delightful musical introduction to the most wonderful time of the year.
The Conference and Convention Center will be beautifully decorated and our meeting is the perfect beginning to the whirlwind four weeks to follow. President Viva Bosland has initiated the practice of inviting a veteran to lead the Pledge of Allegiance before each meeting. Robert Morningstar, a U.S. Air Force retiree, and veteran of assignments in Alaska, Viet Nam and Korea, will perform this honor at the December meeting.
Christmas is for the young at heart as well as children. The Service Committee is asking us to remember both our mature neighbors as well as the youngsters this month. The FG Good Samaritan Society requests game prizes for Bingo and other activities. Items such as crossword puzzle books, seasonal square tissue boxes, jigsaw puzzles, find a word books, costume jewelry, small devotional books, note cards, CDs, etc., are suggested.
The second request is for one of our favorite charities: The House of Hope in Cumberland County. Named for a young girl who lost her life due to violence, the facility is the first stop for youngsters who are removed from their homes for their own safety. Often the children arrive with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and, in the case of meth labs, etc., even those belongings must be destroyed. All sizes of hoodies (child, youth and teen) are in great demand as are pajamas, hats, gloves, winter scarves, socks, baseball hats for boys and hair accessories for girls. Youth wallets are also on the list of needs.
Please remember those less fortunate and pick up a small item for the seniors as well as a needy child when you shop for the special children or loved one in your life. Representatives from both organizations will be on hand to accept your gifts. As always, committee members will be present to receive your hotel toiletries and Boxtops for Education.
The ladies on the Travel Committee will have lots of brochures about upcoming trips — nine are available for sign up, including a super spring trip just announced. How does Atlanta and Warm Springs, GA, and Callaway Gardens sound for early April? You might be thinking ahead to a summer vacation to the Door Country of Wisconsin…a fantastic 11-day trip, which includes Chicago, Milwaukee and points north. If you can’t wait for the details and dates, check the website for more details: ffgladiesclub.org.
Knowing many of our members are heading for warmer climes shortly, Linda Chiaramonte and Sue Brown, co-chairs of the Fashion Show, will be on hand with tickets for this perennially sold-out event. This year’s theme is “Sizzle with Style” and sizzle we will. Wednesday, April 3, is but four months away! Think spring! Dozens of gift baskets have been promised, as well as an early peek at what we would all like to add to our wardrobes.
Doors at the Conference Center open at 10 a.m. You will have ample time to browse the committee tables, purchase tickets for the drawings, have a beverage and greet friends before enjoying a meal of hearty Beef Stroganoff over egg noodles, veggie, rolls and Chef’s choice sweet surprise ending. The cost of the luncheon is $13 and the ladies checking you in would appreciate a check or exact change. A heart healthy chef’s salad is available for the same price upon advance request.
Reservations will be accepted on Nov. 28 between the hours of 8 and 10 a.m. You may call 210-0067 or email email@example.com with the names of those in your group. Cancellations must be received by Friday, Nov. 30, to avoid being charged. The reservation chairs have set aside a special table for those who are new and would like to be seated with other newcomers — just mention that when making your reservation.
Oh, I almost forgot. Spouses and Valentines will be welcomed at the February meeting. Save the date… Feb. 6 …surely with this much notice your sweetheart will not be able to come up with an excuse.
