Last hike of the season for the FFG Hiking Group

CROSSVILLE — On Friday, Nov. 30 we will hike here in The Glade. This is a secret mystery hike that we have never done before. It is a beautiful hike through some heavily forested areas of Fairfield Glade. It is especially pretty this time of year. You won’t believe such an isolated looking area could be so close to the middle of Fairfield Glade and you will not believe where it starts and ends. This is an adventure that you won’t want to miss. The hike will be finished by 11 a.m. You will have time to go home before the chili cook-off.

Difficulty: This is an easy 4.4 mile hike on mostly level grassy roads with a few short bushwhacks through the woods. Boots are required to help prevent slipping on leaves.

The chili cook-off will begin at 11:30 a.m at the FFG United Methodist Church. This is our end of the season get together and it is a competition for the FFG Hikers best chili, as well as best presentation of the chili. The judges need a lot of chilies to select from, so start working on your favorite recipe. If you do not want to make chili, we will need side dishes such as salads, desserts, and anything that goes with chili. There is a sign up sheet in our space on the bulletin board at the Village Green Mall. Bring whatever you want to drink. Plastic ware, bowls, plates, napkins, cups, etc. will be provided. If you chose not to hike, please plan on attending the chili cook-off party. Bring your spouse even if he or she does not hike.

There is our usual sheet on the bulletin board across from the Fairfield Glade Post Office to sign up for the hike. The group will depart from the parking lot closest to the 4-way stop sign in FFG at the corner of Peavine and Stonehenge at 8 a.m. sharp. Please be there between 7:30 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. to receive information and form carpools. There is no fee for this hike.

For more information call the leaders of the hike Don Hazel at 459-2140 or Gary Ruetenik at 337-7921. You can visit us on the web by typing “FFG Hiking” in Google.

It is hard to believe we have reached the end of the 2012 fall hiking season. It was 11 weeks of fun, a lot of leaves, some huge rocks, great vistas, and good companionship. The 2013 spring season will begin in mid March so stay in shape and look for the spring schedule.

  • LC front page.jpg FFG Ladies Club annual spring fashion show a huge success

“April in Paris” came to Fairfield Glade in the form of a fabulous, well-attended fashion show on April 2. The fashion show is one of the biggest fundraisers presented by the FFG Ladies Club in order to provide scholarships, enabling deserving students, both young and mature, to further their education. The Ladies Club is also a philanthropic organization well known for donating generously to the needs of the community.

  • Tracking tracks.jpg Tracking down old tracks

It is perceived that the lumber business was profitable and extensive throughout the entire area of the current Glade and along much of the path of the described rail from the Glade all the way to Dorton. While our previous reports detailed much about the track of the Cumberland Northern, most of the reported discovery was north of Peavine and east of the four-way stop near the new Wyndham reception center (and east toward Antioch).

  • Friends group plans Elbe River cruise

Our “Friends Traveling Together” group at Fairfield Glade was eagerly anticipating a Russia river cruise with a pre-trip to Ukraine this summer. World events, as it sometimes happens, caused us to rethink those plans. Undeterred, however, we will be embarking instead on an Elbe River cruise from Berlin, Germany to Prague on Aug. 10-22.

  • Abacus Column: Rooting for the prodigal daughter's success

Around June of 2006, I wrote an article for the Chronicle and Glade Sun entitled, “Tonya Hinch: A Prodigal Daughter Returns to Crossville." I had been requested to meet and write about Tonya by a friend and local writer. “Why me,” I asked; “You are a good writer.” “Maybe so,” he replied; “but I don’t speak business, you do.”

  • Enjoying Nature.jpg Enjoying Nature: Keeping up with the bluebirds

There may not be a prettier bird than our Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, (pronounced cee-AL-ee-a cee-AL-iss). Bluebirds stay here in Tennessee all year, and, in the winter, you will often see groups of five or six at a time coming to your suet or mealworm feeder. But this time of year, you'll generally only see two at a time, because once a pair establishes a territory, they will chase off all potential rivals.
