Crossville's annual air show and fly-in slated for Saturday

A wide variety of sport, experimental, antique and former military aircraft will be on display during the 8th annual Air Show and Fly-in at the Crossville Memorial Airport, Saturday, May 27. The show is jointly sponsored by the Crossville Flying Association and Hospice of Cumberland County. The show will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Aircraft are expected from throughout the southeastern United States. Crossville Memorial Airport Manager Norm Westerbuhr says he expects a good turn out of pilots and planes from throughout the region.

“We’ve notified airplane owners and pilots at 30 airports in the region that we welcome their fly-in to Crossville" Westerbuhr added.

Among the aircraft at the event will be a blazing red T-33 jet that last year amazed the crowd with low altitude passes and brilliant white smoke trails. A variety of U.S. and Soviet-built World War II aircraft will be seen in a thrilling demonstration of precision flying from noon to 1 p.m.

A number of sport aircraft owned and flown by Cumberland County residents will provide airplane flights over the Crossville area. There will be a nominal charge for the rides.

Several experimental aircraft will also be on display. Many are built by local flying enthusiasts who belong to the Crossville Flying Association.

A model rocket demonstration will be conducted from 9-10 a.m. Members of the National Association of Rocketry will launch a variety of rockets including an egg lofter, scale models and boost-gliders.

Also on display and flight ready will be an air ambulance, staffed by a full time crew, that is now stationed in Crossville.

A Fairfield Glade restaurateur will provide food and beverages during the day. Funnel cakes will also be sold.

There is no charge for parking at the air show. Parking will be directed by scouts of from the local council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Hospice of Cumberland County will benefit from air show proceeds.
