FGRS visits Proton Therapy Center

CROSSVILLE — As the Proton Therapy Community Information Event on Sept. 6 approaches, some directors of the Fairfield Glade Resident Services (FGRS) made a trip to Knoxville to tour the Provision Center for Proton Therapy. The tour was conducted by Bill Hansen, Vice President of Business and Strategic Development, and Medical Director Marcio Fagundes M.D. Mr. Hansen’s tour, which took the directors deep into the center’s working areas, showed all aspects of the development of the protons and how they are delivered to the patient with pinpoint accuracy.

These and many more subjects will be discussed on Sept. 6 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Community & Conference Center in Fairfield Glade. Dr. Marcio Fagundes of the Provision Center for Proton Therapy of Knoxville will join Dr. Julie Bradley from the University of Florida in presenting one of the most anticipated events of the year. Rev Joe Nilsen will lead off by relating the experiences he had while being treated with Proton Therapy during a recent cancer event.

Proton therapy is a rapidly emerging treatment for many cancers. It is used in conjunction with other modalities but the greatest benefit is that there are few to no side effects, or long term tissue damage.

With only 10 centers open around the country, four new centers will open within the next year. People from this area are fortunate to have a center near them opening in January 2014. With each center costing nearly $150 million to construct, Proton therapy may soon be the cutting edge for cancer therapy.

If you want to have the knowledge to make intelligent decisions for yourself or a loved one who could face the decision of what treatment to undergo for cancer, be sure to attend this Community Information Event.

If it’s not on your calendar yet, put it there now, 9 – 11:30 a.m. at the Fairfield Glade Community & Conference Center on Sept. 6. Everyone is invited, no matter where you live, and best of all there is no charge. Come early to secure a seat and hear these two nationally known speakers.
