Cumberland Auto supports Komen of the Upper Cumberland

CROSSVILLE — Cumberland Auto Center in Cookeville is going pink for October as it looks to donate $25,000 to the Upper Cumberland affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

"It's a cause that is near and dear to our heart," said Brandon Hall, general manager for the automotive sales group that includes Toyota, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Kia and Scion as well as Cumberland Pre-Owned at 1550 Interstate Dr. in Cookeville.

Paula Dunn, the late wife of Cumberland Auto owner Lanny Dunn, passed away in January after a courageous seven-year battle with breast cancer. The automotive group has been the title sponsor of the Tee It Up For the Cure golf tournament in Cookeville since it began in 2006. The event is one of the major funding sources for Komen Upper Cumberland.

To kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cumberland Automotive presented a $5,000 donation to Komen of the Upper Cumberland. Throughout the month, the dealerships will be decked out with pink and additional donations of $5,000 will be made for every 100 cars sold during October.

"Our goal is to donate $25,000 to Komen during October," Hall said.

To thank customers for their help in meeting that goal, Cumberland Auto will enter each customer buying or leasing a new or pre-owned automobile during October in a drawing and one person will win their car. If the winner has not purchased a car from the dealership, he or she will win a $10,000 credit towards the purchase of a new or used retail vehicle from Cumberland Auto.

There will be one winner in the contest.

"Susan G. Komen is a phenomenal organization," Hall said. "They keep as much of the funds in the local area, helping the community around us that has supported Cumberland Auto for 26 years."

Ted McWilliams, executive director of the Upper Cumberland Susan G. Komen affiliate, said, "We are deeply appreciative of Cumberland Auto's support and are absolutely thrilled at how Cumberland Toyota is stepping up to support our mission against breast cancer in our community. This event is a win-win situation for all. Just think, fighting breast cancer and getting a chance to win an excellent auto (new or used) in return. It doesn't get any better than that."

The Upper Cumberland Komen affiliate supports numerous grants in the 14-county region, including the free mammogram program offered at Cumberland Medical Center, the After Breast Cancer Program of the Putnam County YMCA, and numerous screening and survivorship grants in the area. Seventy-five cents of every dollar raised remains in the Upper Cumberland region while 25 cents goes to national research initiatives.
