Friends group plans Elbe River cruise

CROSSVILLE — Our “Friends Traveling Together” group at Fairfield Glade was eagerly anticipating a Russia river cruise with a pre-trip to Ukraine this summer. World events, as it sometimes happens, caused us to rethink those plans. Undeterred, however, we will be embarking instead on an Elbe River cruise from Berlin, Germany to Prague on Aug. 10-22.

Our group has cruised several German rivers during previous trips (including the Rhine, the Mein, the Danube and the Mosel), but this will be our first look at the Elbe River. In addition to beautiful, tranquil scenery, this area of Germany is rich in history.

We will begin our journey in Berlin and experience first hand this 21st Century metropolis following the reunification of East and West Germany after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall. We will have two nights in Berlin, which is the second largest urban area in Europe.

Our river cruise will be on the M/S Allegro which ranked #3 in Conde’ Nast Traveler’s “Top 40 River Cruise Ships in the World” 2014 readers’ poll. While on the ship, we will  make stops in Germany at Tangermunde, Wittenberg, Torgau, Meissen, Dresden and sail through the dramatic sandstone mountains of Swiss Saxony. One of the highlights will be a discovery event about the US and Soviet troop meeting in Torgau during the invasion of Allied Forces in Germany at the end of World War II.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing destinations is Dresden. During the bombing of this city in 1945, most of their treasures were leveled. This city has since been rebuilt and is often called the “Florence of the Elbe.” Known for their arts, cultural events and architecture, this promises to be a highlight of the trip.

Our journey will conclude with a two-night stay in Prague, Czech Republic. We so look forward to returning to Prague to explore this incredible medieval city. Need another motivation? We want to devour some more “trdelnik,” those incredible rolled pastries for which they are famous.

Want to know more about this trip? Call Molly at 337-8638 or email us at FriendsTravelingTogether@gmail.com to make reservations and learn about this exciting trip. We will be happy to provide you with all of the details!
