The East Tennessee Senior Golf Association has asked the Fairfield Glade Representative to serve on this year's committee for the annual year end Championships Tournament. Pete Leitnaker has stepped forward and accepted the challenge. In the past 4 years, two of those events ended up being cancelled. Leitnaker wants to put in safeguards to keep that from happening in the future. Prior to that, and since 1971, only two were cancelled, due to heavy rains from a couple of hurricanes that swept the Carolina coast lines. Back then, many of the tournaments were held on neutral sites in the Ashville/Waynesville area.
Leitnaker believes a change in the format a few years back has also had an adverse effect on player entries during the past four seasons. From 2006–08, Fairfield Glade hosted the two-day tournaments. The number of contestants ranged from 109 – 118. Plus 27 of the wives competed amongst themselves in a separate event.
Dinners following each day of play were attended by more than 210 participants at Druid Hills. Men wore jackets and the ladies loved getting gussied up in their finest dresses. Many of the non-playing wives went to the Cumberland County Playhouse for entertainment. They loved the accommodations at the timeshare rentals.
Leitnaker is hoping the committee for this season's finale will be able to garner similar participation.
All resident men who are property owners in Fairfield Glade, 55 years of age, and members in good standing with the Community Club are eligible to join the ETSGA traveling gang. You'll be playing some wonderful private country clubs – 17 in all. Avalon Golf Club in Lenore, is our newest addition to the Association for the upcoming 2014 season. Yeah, and there are a few Donald Ross sites out there too!
