Ladies Club invests in the future

Always recognized for generosity to their adopted hometown, members of the Fairfield Glade Ladies Club made a substantial investment in the youth of Cumberland County this past month.

On June 5, 19 area students were awarded scholarships totaling $23,500. Traditional and non-traditional students received financial aid to further their education at area universities, community colleges, technical and vocational schools.

At the June 27 meeting of the Cumberland County Board of Education, Ladies Club President Viva Bosland was present to distribute $500 checks for each library at 11 Cumberland County schools. Additionally, the Phoenix School program received $1,500 for its Wings program and $800 was earmarked for the school shoe fund.

Investing in the future of the children of the community is always first and foremost in the minds of the Fairfield Glade Ladies Club. In addition, generous contributions were made to the Imagination Library, House of Hope, Kids on the Rise and Teens Against Drugs Center. In total, 32 local charities received a share of the $56,891 ($9,591 in goods) raised by the members during the 2012-’13 club year.

Many club members also volunteer in area schools or in many of the local organizations that serve children.

  • Fair Park Heritage Day.jpg Heritage demonstrators welcome

Most of Americans today never stop to think how different our lives would have been several hundred years ago. How many times a day do we wash our hands, and do we ever realize when we take those hot showers and lather up, the long all-day process our ancestors had to go through just to make a bar of soap? Not to mention packing water to the house and heating it up over a wood fire just to have a bath and wash clothes. Times are changing faster than ever.
