CROSSVILLE — Can you believe that it is already September with the end of another year not so far away. As you think about your plans for next year, consider joining the AARP TaxAide volunteers. Challenge yourself to learn basic tax laws and the TaxWise software. AARP tax preparation sites in Crossville, Fairfield Glade, Pleasant Hill, Sparta, Tansi and Jamestown provide free tax assistance, tax return preparation and e-filing services for local residents and not just for seniors. The work is done by teams of volunteers and new volunteers are always needed. Even if you have no experience with taxes (except, of course, to pay them) you can help. Study materials are mailed to prospective counselors in November; on-line training and practice problems are available from December and all through the tax season; and a week of classroom work is held in January, both in Cookeville and Crossville. The computer software programs help with the math issues for tax calculations. All new counselors are paired with experienced people for the hands-on part of the training. Volunteers are also needed to help with greeting clients and organizing their paperwork. If you would like to be a part of the team that provides this valuable free service, or would like more information about the program, please call 456-8587.

If Dad would have frozen the back 40
There is another ice skating show on television. Hardly a day or week passes without a skating contest or exhibition. I enjoy watching the skaters – my favorite is Scott Hamilton because he puts on a great crowd-pleasing performance.
