Panel OKs VSO office relocation

CROSSVILLE — The offices for the Cumberland County Veterans Service Officer may be moved into the lower level of the Cumberland County Courthouse.

Cumberland County Mayor Kenneth Carey Jr. told commissioners serving on the building and grounds committee that he would like to move the office from its current location on Thurman Ave. in the small house directly behind the courthouse, into the lower level of the courthouse.

"I'd like to move them into the office in the lower level where the election commission is storing their voting machines. They won't need all of that room and the veterans service officer could occupy about half of the space. I would need to have a wall partition built and maybe some additional furniture. I'd like to get a recommendation from you on that. I would say it could be done for $2,500 or less," Carey said.

"Will that give him enough space? I mean I'd hate to move them over here and it not be big enough for them," 9th District Commissioner Carmin Lynch said.

"Yes, I believe it will. The new staff working over there is doing a lot of electronic record keeping and storing files on a computer. They won't need half the space that was needed for paper files," Carey said.

"I agree they need to move, but I just want to make sure they have enough room," Lynch said.

"We really need to do this. That building is falling apart over there. Honestly, it's not fit for anyone," Carey said.

Roy Turner, 7th District commissioner, made a motion to recommend the move to budget with funding for the project not to exceed $2,500. Joe Koester, 5th District commissioner, supported the motion and it was unanimously approved.

"Where will the money come from for this?" Larry Allen, 6th District commissioner, asked.

"That's a decision for budget (committee)," Lynch said.

"There may be enough funds in the courthouse maintenance fund. We'll have to check," Carey said.

"Are there any drawings or plans for the courthouse? I asked about this before, but nobody knows of any or can find any. I think we ought to have some updated drawings done or plans of the courthouse," Allen said.

Nobody was sure of where any plans of the courthouse were located.

John Kinnunen, 9th District commissioner, suggested checking with the Tennessee Technology Center  of Crossville and seeing if one of the drafting classes might be interested in drawing up the plans as part of a project.

Carey also said that after the Cumberland County Finance Department moves from its offices on the main floor up to the third floor of the courthouse, he would like to turn one of the offices into a conference room.

"I don't need any action on that now, but I just wanted you all to think about the idea. We need more room for a conference area and that would be an ideal location," Carey said.

"I think that sounds like a good idea," Sonya Rimmer, 8th District commissioner and building and grounds chairperson, said.

Cumberland County Finance Director Nathan Brock previously reported the finance department should be moved into the newly renovated office on the third floor of the courthouse by the end of the calendar year. The move will put all of the finance department into one office area, instead of being in two offices as it is now.
