CROSSVILLE — Kerri Deck received the Lifeguard of the Year Award for 2013. This award is presented to one lifeguard each season. Deck was responsible for rescuing a struggling child in Druid Hills Pool this summer. In addition to being an alert lifeguard who is always on her toes, Deck demonstrates a strong work ethic and positive attitude. She is the first person to volunteer for extra shifts, events and to complete extra cleaning duties while working (all while being in high school and playing sports). She is a leader among her peers and is a reliable employee in making sure activities run smoothly. Thank you, Kerri, for you hard work and dedication to Fairfield Glade Community Club and all our customers.

Feeding and counting birds
A heavy mast crop last fall was one sign that led those who use old-time folk lore to predict conditions to warn that the winter of 2013-'14 would be bad. It was a good call. March blasts of arctic air make seeking out the remaining seeds, berries and nuts a matter of survival for wild birds and animals. Insect-eating creatures find food scarcer due to cold, as well.
Bad weather hurts the bottom line, but warmer weather is on the way
As a resort community, much of the revenue generated in Fairfield Glade relies on visitors. So far this year, cold weather has put quite a damper on outdoor activity. Due to the freezing temperatures and snow, January golf rounds recorded 943 18-hole equivalents – about 325 rounds under budget and 528 less than last year.
The Neighborhood Watch Coalition and you
I know you've heard the term "neighborhood watch," but have you given any thought as to what members of a watch coalition do? The first thing that probably comes to mind is that it's a group of very nosey people wanting to find out who you are, what you have, how much you're worth and all the other curiosities associated with people who can't mind their own business. That answer is simply wrong.

PATCHES OF LIFE: Took our toes to the beach
My daughter –in–law insists on me getting a pedicure when I visit her in Florida. Since the plans for the week included the beach, I was in favor. Well, to be honest I would have been in favor beach or no beach.
Questions on the rules of golf
We know everyone wants to play by the rules of golf. But sometimes it’s not the U.S.G.A. Rules of Golf. We would like to try and help people clarify any situation or rule that is confusing to them.
