Co-operative efforts provide habitat for Lake Malvern

CROSSVILLE — On Saturday, March 8, nine students from Tennessee Technological University, 13 members of the Fairfield Glade Bass Club, Lakes Consultant Fred Heitman and his grandson worked together to assemble approximately 500 pieces of fish habitat structure to be placed in Lake Malvern. The purpose of the structure is to provide an appropriate environment for the fish of Lake Malvern.

Currently, there is very little structure available in the lake and the fish population is not nearly as productive as it could be.  Structure provides an area where fish can locate food and as well as provide them with protection from predators. The structure consisted of plastic pots with pieces of plastic pipe secured with bagged concrete. As a matter of quantity, a total of 12,640 pounds of the bagged concrete was used. Other items of structure were also assembled to provide spawning areas for the fish. These were creatively constructed re-cycling items that would have probably ended up in a landfill. All of the structures assembled w were placed in Lake Malvern on March 28, again as a cooperative effort of Tennessee Tech students, Fred Heitman and volunteers from the Fairfield Glade Bass Club. The structure was placed on the bottom of Lake Malvern, deep enough as to not interfere with boating and other leisure activities on the lake. Fifty pieces of structure were also made to be installed in Lakes Dartmoor and St. George in an attempt to draw more fish near the fishing piers at both lakes.
