Archives concludes a successful year

CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County Archives and Family Heritage Center has had a busy and successful year. From expanding our county records collection to participating in the County Fair with a booth in the Exposition Hall, our volunteers have been the key to all our progress. The Art Circle Public Library, Friends of the Library and the Crab Orchard Chapter of Daughters of the Revolution have been consistent supporters. Our patrons have become our friends.

Our bookshelves are bulging with new titles.  We have a number of new books on Tennessee history and genealogy, as well as from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Our military collection has increased with the addition of books on the War of 1812. Our favorite title is “He Loves a Good Drink of Rum – Military Desertion during the Revolutionary War.” It names names. “Opening of the Ozarks” is a three-book set on the settling of Missouri.  New publications from historical and genealogical societies, both in Tennessee and many other states, are also filled with little-known data.

The Archives will start the New Year with Second Saturday Seminars. Our first seminar will be on Saturday, Jan. 11, 10 a.m. to noon, with an in-depth study of census records. An alternative weather day will be on the third Saturday, Jan. 18. If you would like to stay and search for your ancestry, bring a bag lunch and chat about genealogy while eating. Check our monthly articles for upcoming programs and events. We look forward to meeting you.

Classes and seminars offered by the Archives throughout the year are always free to the public. For more information, you can call the Archives at 931-707-8136, or come by the Archives at 95 East First Street.
