Bass Club finding lots and lots of small fish

Lake St. George was the site of Fairfield Glade Bass Club’s Tournament  8. A total of 27 fishermen and women participated, with a grand total of 191 bass being caught and released.

The number of bass was by far the best yet this year, but the size was down considerably. This goes to show, though, that the overall health of Lake St. George is really good and the bass have had many years of successful reproduction. Participating in this tournament were three guests, Bob Calis’s daughter, Karyn; Bill Desmond’s grandson, Grant; and my grandson, Matthew, all of whom were very successful in fishing in a five-hour tournament.

The results are as follows:

First Place — Ron Riccetti (again) and John Slinkard with five bass weighing 7.03 pounds;

Second Place — Duane Vandewalker and Mike O’Hara with five bass with a weight of 5.48 pounds;

Third Place — John Upp and Jim Hajny with five bass weighing 4.16 pounds;

Fourth Place — Bill Desmond and Grandson, Grant Lovett with five bass weighing 4.00 pounds; and,

Fifth Place — John Seimer and Paul Demet with five bass weighing 3.86 pounds.

Big Bass Honors went again to Ron Riccetti with a 21-inch, 4.74 pound bass.

Fairfield Glade is a beautiful place, so let’s all do our part to keep it that way. As you walk or otherwise travel through the Glade, make and effort to gather any trash along your way. If everyone helps, it will remain a beautiful place.

    “April in Paris” came to Fairfield Glade in the form of a fabulous, well-attended fashion show on April 2. The fashion show is one of the biggest fundraisers presented by the FFG Ladies Club in order to provide scholarships, enabling deserving students, both young and mature, to further their education. The Ladies Club is also a philanthropic organization well known for donating generously to the needs of the community.

  • Tracking tracks.jpg Tracking down old tracks

    It is perceived that the lumber business was profitable and extensive throughout the entire area of the current Glade and along much of the path of the described rail from the Glade all the way to Dorton. While our previous reports detailed much about the track of the Cumberland Northern, most of the reported discovery was north of Peavine and east of the four-way stop near the new Wyndham reception center (and east toward Antioch).

  • Friends group plans Elbe River cruise

    Our “Friends Traveling Together” group at Fairfield Glade was eagerly anticipating a Russia river cruise with a pre-trip to Ukraine this summer. World events, as it sometimes happens, caused us to rethink those plans. Undeterred, however, we will be embarking instead on an Elbe River cruise from Berlin, Germany to Prague on Aug. 10-22.

  • Abacus Column: Rooting for the prodigal daughter's success

    Around June of 2006, I wrote an article for the Chronicle and Glade Sun entitled, “Tonya Hinch: A Prodigal Daughter Returns to Crossville." I had been requested to meet and write about Tonya by a friend and local writer. “Why me,” I asked; “You are a good writer.” “Maybe so,” he replied; “but I don’t speak business, you do.”

  • Enjoying Nature.jpg Enjoying Nature: Keeping up with the bluebirds

    There may not be a prettier bird than our Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, (pronounced cee-AL-ee-a cee-AL-iss). Bluebirds stay here in Tennessee all year, and, in the winter, you will often see groups of five or six at a time coming to your suet or mealworm feeder. But this time of year, you'll generally only see two at a time, because once a pair establishes a territory, they will chase off all potential rivals.
