CMC Regional Breast Center offers full range of screening, diagnostic services

Cumberland Medical Center is proud to offer digital mammography services at the Regional Breast Center on Cleveland St. and CMC's Fairfield Glade location on Stonehenge Dr. The state-of-the-art technology, certified by the Food and Drug Administration, offers the ability to increase image quality, pinpoint specific areas for further evaluation and search for abnormal areas of density, mass or thickening. In fact, studies indicate digital mammography is more accurate and offers significant benefits over older technology to women under the age of 50 and those with dense breast tissue.

Screening mammography is performed on women who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends women age 40 and older have a screening mammogram every year. Those with a close relative, such as mother or sister, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer prior to menopause should begin screenings ten years prior to the age their relative was diagnosed, but not earlier than 25 years old. A screening mammogram takes about 45 minutes, including registration, and the result is usually available to the patient's physician within one to two days. It usually consists of two views of each breast and, when possible, comparison mammograms are used to provide the most accurate reading.

Diagnostic mammography is performed under the direct supervision of the interpreting radiologist and is done when a screening mammogram identifies a lump or abnormal result needing further study. Other testing, such as ultrasound or biopsy, may also be necessary to diagnose an abnormality. Ultrasounds can determine if a lump is solid or fluid filled.

All digital mammograms are read by board-certified radiologists. CMC provides full-field digital mammography and computer-aided diagnostics, and the program is accredited by the American College of Radiology.

CMC's nurse navigator, a patient navigation certified registered nurse, will be involved with all patients needing diagnostic testing and assists with coordination of services throughout the various levels of care potentially needed.

CMC, in conjunction with the Susan G. Komen grant program, provides about 150 free mammograms each year, in addition to providing educational materials and other services.

For questions or general information regarding CMC's Regional Breast Center, call 459-7323 or 459-7370. To schedule a mammogram, call 459-7040 or 459-7041.
