Lions Travelogue season begins with Eastern Canada

CROSSVILLE — Fall must be here because it is time to start the FFG Lions Club Travel and Adventure Series. The first show will take you on a trip to the Maritimes and Newfoundland in Eastern Canada on Oct. 7 at the Palace Theatre starting at 7 p.m.

Many, if not all of you, have heard of Canadian places like Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Winnipeg and Windsor. But, most, if not all of you, have never heard of Gaspe Peninsula, Tadoussac, Bonaventure Island, Charlottetown or Cape Breton Highlands National Park. After Oct. 7 you will know about these places and many more.

John Holod and Jodie Ginter will present their video that includes the Caspe Peninsula and Newfoundland/Labrador for a spectacular adventure that they feel should be on every travelers “to do” list. In addition to the places listed above that you probably have not seen, here are some more: Forillon National Park, Perc’e Rock, Acadian isles and Village, Bay of Fundy, Hopewell Rocks and Peggy’s Cove.

You will also experience whale watching, lighthouse history, largest migratory bird refuge in North America, world’s highest tides and Machias Seal Island and Puffin Tour. You will ferry to Newfoundland, Labrador and Saint John and enjoy many national parks. This is a thrill packed video that will hold your attention for the entire evening. You’re invited to relax, kick off your shoes, get a bag of popcorn and a soft drink and enjoy a new adventure for the next couple of hours.

Season tickets will be available at the door for $30 for six shows including the one for this evening. Otherwise, you may purchase a ticket for the Oct. 7 show for $7 apiece. The remaining five shows for the series are: Nov. 4 “Lure of Alaska”; Dec. 2 ”The Heart of San Francisco”; Feb. 3 “Rediscovering Ancient America”; March 3 “Amazon” and April 7 “Bhutan, The Cloud Kingdom.”

The Fairfield Glade Lions Club are pleased to bring you the Travel & Adventure Series each year. The presenters are professional people who send their lives filming, editing and showing you places of interest. Maybe some of you have traveled to some of these places but it will bring back some fine memories. Others can enjoy sitting in a comfortable atmosphere and visit places they may never see in person. We hope you will long remember the parts of this world that should entertain your mind.

  • LC front page.jpg FFG Ladies Club annual spring fashion show a huge success

“April in Paris” came to Fairfield Glade in the form of a fabulous, well-attended fashion show on April 2. The fashion show is one of the biggest fundraisers presented by the FFG Ladies Club in order to provide scholarships, enabling deserving students, both young and mature, to further their education. The Ladies Club is also a philanthropic organization well known for donating generously to the needs of the community.

  • Tracking tracks.jpg Tracking down old tracks

It is perceived that the lumber business was profitable and extensive throughout the entire area of the current Glade and along much of the path of the described rail from the Glade all the way to Dorton. While our previous reports detailed much about the track of the Cumberland Northern, most of the reported discovery was north of Peavine and east of the four-way stop near the new Wyndham reception center (and east toward Antioch).

  • Friends group plans Elbe River cruise

Our “Friends Traveling Together” group at Fairfield Glade was eagerly anticipating a Russia river cruise with a pre-trip to Ukraine this summer. World events, as it sometimes happens, caused us to rethink those plans. Undeterred, however, we will be embarking instead on an Elbe River cruise from Berlin, Germany to Prague on Aug. 10-22.

  • Abacus Column: Rooting for the prodigal daughter's success

Around June of 2006, I wrote an article for the Chronicle and Glade Sun entitled, “Tonya Hinch: A Prodigal Daughter Returns to Crossville." I had been requested to meet and write about Tonya by a friend and local writer. “Why me,” I asked; “You are a good writer.” “Maybe so,” he replied; “but I don’t speak business, you do.”

  • Enjoying Nature.jpg Enjoying Nature: Keeping up with the bluebirds

There may not be a prettier bird than our Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, (pronounced cee-AL-ee-a cee-AL-iss). Bluebirds stay here in Tennessee all year, and, in the winter, you will often see groups of five or six at a time coming to your suet or mealworm feeder. But this time of year, you'll generally only see two at a time, because once a pair establishes a territory, they will chase off all potential rivals.
