Medical Arts Building expected to open in September

CROSSVILLE — Residents of Fairfield Glade will be able to take advantage of great convenience in health care later this year when the Fairfield Glade Medical Arts facility of Cumberland Medical Center is open for business.

"We're right on schedule," said Ron Hellmund, director of engineering services and leader of the Fairfield Glade project.

The Medical Arts building will be adjacent to the current Wellness Complex at Fairfield Glade, next to the Fairfield Glade Community and Conference Center.

Work began in August to build new parking areas at the Wellness Complex, and the old parking area will become a staging area for the building construction. In addition to new parking areas, there is a new exit onto Stonehenge Drive that is expected to help traffic flow in the area.

"We're working very closely with the Fairfield Glade community and making sure we're being a good partner with them," Hellmund said. "We're going to redo the front of the current wellness complex and make it look like one building when it's finished. It will be a very attractive building and we're going to mirror the community center with a lot of stone."

The Medical Arts Building will be 25,000 square feet offering digital mammography and radiology, lab services and a walk-in clinic. There will be specialty offices for orthopedics and geriatrics. Office space will also be available for physicians to lease.

"They can just drive to our Medical Arts facility for some services instead of driving into town," Hellmund said, noting that the facility would not offer emergency services.

The Medical Arts facility was first announced in 2011. At that time, Ed Anderson, chairman of the CMC Board of Directors, said, "We are really excited about this and looking forward to it. This is something we have discussed for a period of time. We've had property out there for four or five years, waiting for the opportunity and appropriate time that we could go out there and do this in partnership with Fairfield."

The property is 3.071 acres of land at the corner of Stonehenge Dr. and Village Dr. After work began on evaluating the site for construction, the original building location was found to be unsuitable due to geographic complications. After further study, it was discovered space was available next to the existing Wellness Complex site and plans were redrawn.

Contractor for the project is Strauss Construction Company of Chattanooga.
