Member-Guest Couples Invitational raises $2,500 for American Cancer Society

Submitted

CROSSVILLE — The 29th annual Member-Guest Couples Invitational was held Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at Heatherhurst Golf Course. The event kicked off Thursday evening at the Fairfield Glade Community and Conference Center with drinks, food and fellowship. A silent auction was held for three pictures courtesy of Director of Golf, Steve Kraft, and tickets were sold for a 50/50 drawing with all the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. When all the bids were totaled and the money from the drawing counted, we ended up raising $2,500 for the American Cancer Society.

We would like to thank Food and Beverage Director, James Ivankovich, Chef Jerry, Kathryn Swicegood and the entire staff at the Community and Conference Center for a great meal and for their hospitality. The tournament would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors, and we would like to recognize them one more time:

Title sponsor: Cumberland Eye Care

Silver sponsor: Crossville Heating & Cooling

Closest-to-the-Pin sponsor: Fairfield Homes/Glade Realty

Cart sponsor: Happy Hound Realty

Hole sponsors: Law Office of Melanie Shada, Romo’s Mexican Restaurant, FFG Beauty Shop, Highland Federal Savings & Loan, Gondola Pizza & Steakhouse, Zurich Homes, Plateau Orthopedics, Rusty Rooster, A -1 Auto Repair, Brown Insurance, Beef & Barrel/Red’s Ale House/Blind Zebra Restaurants, Just One More Sports Bar & Grill

With cooperation from Mother Nature, the 31- team field was able to complete two days of competition with no suspension of play and very little rain. Friday’s round was highlighted by a hole-in-one on hole 14 of the Crag by Bob Szalka. Not to be outdone, Lee Featherstone had an ace of his own on Saturday on  hole 13 of the Brae. Great shots by both guys; however, neither was a winner of closest-to-the-hole prize, as both were made on holes designated as closest-to-the-hole for the ladies. The winners for the weekend were as follows:

Closest-to-the-Pin Friday: hole 3 Ginny Fox, hole 8 Ken Newman, hole 12 Jim Mann, hole 14 Patti Blakely.

Closest-to-the-Pin Saturday: hole 3 Jean Roise, hole 7 Mike Hayes, hole 13 Ken Rogers, hole 15 Ron Moe.

As always, Golf Course Superintendent Mark Knaebel and his staff had both the Crag and Brae in great shape for the weekend. This is no small feat considering almost nine inches of rain fell the two weeks leading up to the event.

On Saturday afternoon, after all the scores were tallied, the results were as follows:

Flight 1: First Place John and Bonnie Bailey, Ted & Jane Crary; Second Place Charlie and Jo Huber, Mike and Louise Bury; Third Place Dan Richardson, Jean Roise, Dan and Sharon Kington; Fourth Place Fred and Connie Fusco, Rich and Shirlee Firebaugh.

Flight 2: First Place Gary and Ann Robbins, John and Neil Tingue; Second Place Dave McElroy, Mary Manley, Jon and Nancy Crittenden; Third Place Jerry and Carol Schahrer, Al and Judy Herman; Fourth Place Corinne and Bill Custer, Frank Denofrio, Cathy Weis

Flight 3: First Place Jim and June Mann, Mike and Laurelie Hayes; Second Place Phil and Ginny Fox, Jim and Sue Bachman; Third Place Bob and Daty Stephens, Lee and Glenda Featherstone; Fourth Place Ron Moe, Julie Moore, Joe and Ellen Groesch

Flight 4: First Place Frank Wright, Karen Toomey, Dave and Diana Pensak; Second Place Sid and Jeani Miller, Darl and Carmen Zeigler; Third Place Russ and Virginia Schubert, Sonny and Karen Rogers; Fourth Place Jean and Linda LeBreux, Charles and Jeanne Lizotte

Thank you to everyone who played in the event. We hope to see everyone back next year. Remember, next year is the 30th year for the Member-Guest, so be sure to sign up early to secure your spot. Also, we are still looking for a committee for the Member-Guest. If you are interested, please contact Steve Kraft.

Special thanks to Bob and Michele Cooke for their help in the preparations for the tournament and at the reception Thursday night and to the Heatherhurst Snack Bar staff for all the work they did preparing lunch each day.
