Hamby is Student of the Month

CROSSVILLE — Stone Memorial High School senior Jacqueline Hamby has been named February “Student of the Month” by the Fairfield Glade Lions Club. Jacqueline was selected to receive this honor by her counselor, Lisa Dillard, because of her grades and outside interests.

Jacqueline’s school activities include Dance Team for four years, Leo Club in her freshman year, Beta Club in junior and senior years and the Tennis Team for the past three years. Her other activities involve dancing at the Cumberland County Playhouse for the past 10 years and a member of the Grassy Cove Methodist Church.

She loves to write poetry as a hobby, play tennis, swim and dance wherever and whenever possible. Jacqueline commented, “Dancing is the majority of my life.” Hamby’s future plans and goals are to attend Middle Tennessee State University. She intends to major in Social Work and minor in Dance.

Jacqueline and her parents, Kathy and James Hamby, will be invited to attend a special “Student of the Month” Dinner meeting in May 2013. All of the monthly honored students and their parents will be invited. The main purpose is to introduce them to the Lions Club and present each student with an engraved plaque with his/her name and the specific month they were honored.

“This is a special annual occasion our club members look forward to attend,” commented Lion Program Chairman Bob Cover. “We are very proud to play a part in these young students lives and make them feel special for their fine accomplishments. It is also important to the Lions to honor the parents who have served as excellent examples for guiding the future of their children,” Cover said.

Membership in the Lions Club is opened to both men and women with a special membership rate for married couples. Dinner meetings are held at the Druid Hills Country Club. The Lions offer many opportunities to serve our community and get to know some other residents of Fairfield Glade. Please call Membership Chairman Jerry McBride, 707-0438, and tell him you would like to attend a meeting. Your first meeting will be as a guest of the Lions Club.

  • LC front page.jpg FFG Ladies Club annual spring fashion show a huge success

“April in Paris” came to Fairfield Glade in the form of a fabulous, well-attended fashion show on April 2. The fashion show is one of the biggest fundraisers presented by the FFG Ladies Club in order to provide scholarships, enabling deserving students, both young and mature, to further their education. The Ladies Club is also a philanthropic organization well known for donating generously to the needs of the community.

  • Tracking tracks.jpg Tracking down old tracks

It is perceived that the lumber business was profitable and extensive throughout the entire area of the current Glade and along much of the path of the described rail from the Glade all the way to Dorton. While our previous reports detailed much about the track of the Cumberland Northern, most of the reported discovery was north of Peavine and east of the four-way stop near the new Wyndham reception center (and east toward Antioch).

  • Friends group plans Elbe River cruise

Our “Friends Traveling Together” group at Fairfield Glade was eagerly anticipating a Russia river cruise with a pre-trip to Ukraine this summer. World events, as it sometimes happens, caused us to rethink those plans. Undeterred, however, we will be embarking instead on an Elbe River cruise from Berlin, Germany to Prague on Aug. 10-22.

  • Abacus Column: Rooting for the prodigal daughter's success

Around June of 2006, I wrote an article for the Chronicle and Glade Sun entitled, “Tonya Hinch: A Prodigal Daughter Returns to Crossville." I had been requested to meet and write about Tonya by a friend and local writer. “Why me,” I asked; “You are a good writer.” “Maybe so,” he replied; “but I don’t speak business, you do.”

  • Enjoying Nature.jpg Enjoying Nature: Keeping up with the bluebirds

There may not be a prettier bird than our Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, (pronounced cee-AL-ee-a cee-AL-iss). Bluebirds stay here in Tennessee all year, and, in the winter, you will often see groups of five or six at a time coming to your suet or mealworm feeder. But this time of year, you'll generally only see two at a time, because once a pair establishes a territory, they will chase off all potential rivals.
