TDOT officials outline steps needed to get the Peavine Road project approved

CROSSVILLE — Over 100 Lions and their guests were treated to an expose of what is really involved to putting together the TDOT project to improve and widen Peavine Road for the residents of Fairfield Glade. This is a project that has been in the works upwards of 15 years, but is now reaching final drawing stages.

On hand for this program were Jennifer Flynn, community relations officer, and Ken Flynn, director of operations for TDOT for Region Two, comprised of 24 counties. Ken is a civil engineer and a graduate of Tennessee Tech, has worked for TDOT since 1984 and was just named director of operations in January of this year. Jennifer started her career with TDOT in 1975 and has served in her current role for 10 years.

In a very detailed presentation of the project, it was noted that the number one obstacle in getting things rolling is determining how to move the large power lines installed by VEC a few years ago.

Current estimates highlight the fact that it could cost upward of 10 million dollars to do this realignment. In addition, there are environmental problems regarding the endangered Indiana Bat, relocating wetlands to new locations and setting up construction so as to be the least offensive to FFG residents. Over 17,000 vehicle trips are registered almost every day on Peavine Road, according to the TDOT officials.

A large contingent of guests were present who were deeply interested in this project as well as four Leo Lions from Cumberland County High School and their advisor, Blake Allen. Leos present were Bailey Galen, Haley Mitchell, Rebecca Carter and Kam Netherton.

Many questions were forthcoming from the audience and all were handled in a very professional manner. Ken Flynn did confide that he hoped that all the details could be ironed out by yearend, with construction to start early in 2014.
