TGA announces extension for Women’s Open

CROSSVILLE — Franklin, TN — The Tennessee Golf Association (TGA) announced Friday that the city of Crossville has agreed to a two-year extension to continue serving as the title sponsor of the Golf Capital of Tennessee Women’s Open championship through 2015.

The city of Crossville, better known as the Golf Capital of Tennessee, has served as title sponsor of the Tennessee Women’s Open since 2008.

“We are excited to continue our sponsorship of the Golf Capital of Tennessee Women’s Open championship,” said Crossville Mayor J.H. Graham III. “This is a great even for Crossville to host, and we are proud to be the home of such a prestigious championship which annually brings in golfers from all over the country to our city.”

In conjunction with this announcement, the TGA stated that it has also secured a two-year extension with Stonehenge Golf Club, and the course will continue serving as the host site for the championship. Fairfield Glade’s Stonehenge Golf Club previously hosted this annual championship since 2009.

TGA executive director Matt Vanderpool said, “The TGA is thrilled to able to continue our wonderful relationship with Crossville and Stonehenge Golf Club, and we look forward to working with both of them to make our Women’s Open Championship even better.”

He continued, “Crossville plays such an important role in the landscape of golf in Tennessee and we could not be happier that one of our premier championships will continue to be played in that community for the next few years.”

In addition to the Golf Capital of Tennessee Women’s Open, Stonehenge Golf Club annually hosts the TGA’s  Father-Son Championship and the Tennessee Section PGA’s Tennessee Senior State Open presented by the city of Crossville.

This year Stonehenge Golf Club will also welcome the Tennessee Challenge Cup matches, an annual event between Tennessee amateurs and professionals.

  • Tracking tracks.jpg Tracking down old tracks

It is perceived that the lumber business was profitable and extensive throughout the entire area of the current Glade and along much of the path of the described rail from the Glade all the way to Dorton. While our previous reports detailed much about the track of the Cumberland Northern, most of the reported discovery was north of Peavine and east of the four-way stop near the new Wyndham reception center (and east toward Antioch).

  • Friends group plans Elbe River cruise

Our “Friends Traveling Together” group at Fairfield Glade was eagerly anticipating a Russia river cruise with a pre-trip to Ukraine this summer. World events, as it sometimes happens, caused us to rethink those plans. Undeterred, however, we will be embarking instead on an Elbe River cruise from Berlin, Germany to Prague on Aug. 10-22.

Around June of 2006, I wrote an article for the Chronicle and Glade Sun entitled, “Tonya Hinch: A Prodigal Daughter Returns to Crossville." I had been requested to meet and write about Tonya by a friend and local writer. “Why me,” I asked; “You are a good writer.” “Maybe so,” he replied; “but I don’t speak business, you do.”

  • Enjoying Nature.jpg Enjoying Nature: Keeping up with the bluebirds

There may not be a prettier bird than our Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, (pronounced cee-AL-ee-a cee-AL-iss). Bluebirds stay here in Tennessee all year, and, in the winter, you will often see groups of five or six at a time coming to your suet or mealworm feeder. But this time of year, you'll generally only see two at a time, because once a pair establishes a territory, they will chase off all potential rivals.
