Edwin J. Baes

May 27, 1924 — Nov. 6, 2008

Edwin John Baes, of Farifield Glade, passed away Nov. 6, 2008. A memorial service was held Nov. 17 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Mr. Baes was born May 27, 1924, in St. Louis, MO, the son of Edwin and Margaret Baes.

He graduated from Catholic Central in Grand Rapids, MI, in 1943, and was class president. He proudly served his country as a lieutenant in the Army Air Force during World War II. After 40-year career with A.M. International, Ed and Bernadette retired to Fairfield Glade. He had a passion for golfing, hunting, fishing, water coloring and Michigan State University Spartan sports. He was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fairfield Glade.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Bernadette; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Andrea of Brentwood, Robert of Fairfield Glade, Thomas and Linda of Flint, MI, Richard and Mary of Castro Valley, CA and Edwin and Joanne of Holland, MI; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of friends in Tennessee and Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation.

Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Shirley S. Duer

Dec. 20, 1935 — Nov. 9, 2008

Shirley Sue (Powell) Duer, 72, of Crossville, passed away Nov. 9, 2008, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville. Funeral services were held Nov. 11 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jack Noble officiating. Interment was in Crossville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Duer was born Dec. 20, 1935, in Meigs County, the daughter of John Scott Powell Jr. and Dean Stanton.

She moved to Crossville in 1965. She was a member of the Conservation Committee with Winfield Dunn, secretary at the Constitutional Convention in 1977, regional manager to Lamar Alexander from 1978 to 1979, elected to the Tennessee State Legislature in 1980 to 1996 and was the first of three women in the state legislature. She was the first female minority whip of the Republican Party.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Carl Thomas Duer, Sr. of Crossville; daughters and son in law, Shelly Duer and Duane Landau of Wernersville, PA and Libby Duer of Villa Hills, KY; and son, Carl "Tommy" Duer, Jr. of Crossville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Beth Powell; and brother, Dr. Billy Jo Powell.

Pallbearers were Duane Landau, Mike Mabry, Steve Ledbetter, Jim Powell, Bill Oglesby and Dr. John Sherrill.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Art Circle Library Building Funds, c/o Circle of Friends, Irene Swafford, First National Bank of Tennessee, 1386 N. Main St., Crossville, TN 38555.

Carl J. Good

Nov. 12, 2008

Carl John Good, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Nov. 12, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Fairfield Glade Community Church. Interment will be in the Fairfield Glade Community Church Columbarium.

Mr. Good was born in Royal Oak Township, MI, the son of John and Harriett Good.

Before retiring, he had been in marketing and sales for Superwood Corp. and had also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Fairfield Glade Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Good of Fairfield Glade; son, Jeffrey Good (Lori) of Maple Grove, MN; daughter, Carolyn Terapak of Burke, VA; grandchildren, Stephen Terapak of California and Michael Terapak of North Carolina; and brothers, Don Good (Ethel) and Edwin Good, all of Michigan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Matonican.

James E. Tuinier

May 5, 1939 — Nov. 4, 2008

James Eugene Tuinier, 69, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Nov. 4, 2008. Interment was in Grand Prairie Cemetery in Kalamazoo, MI.

Mr. Tuinier was born May 5, 1939, in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of John W. and Helen Rebecca (Triestram) Tuinier.

He was retired from Eaton Manufacturing & Durametalic Corp. He served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960. He loved riding his Harley, doing yard work and walking. He enjoyed his guitar, TV, his model train setup and golf. He received two lung transplants, 1998 and 2003, and enjoyed life to the fullest with these precious gifts. He will be missed by all his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce (Buxton) Tuinier of Fairfield Glade; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Brad Hare of Tipton, OH; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Russell Whitfield of Arizona and Pat and Roger Whitfield of Michigan; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Linda Tuinier of California; four grandchildren; and his beloved pet dog, Zoey.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
