Neighbors-in-Need reaches a hand from club to community

In the summer of 2008, Director of Operations Tommy Lee was looking for ways to assist the Fairfield Glade community, to show how the department is a true part of the community. The Neighbors-in-Need program was suggested. The program consists of Community Club volunteers forming together as a team to be dispatched to Fairfield Glade residents who may need assistance.

The program was a great success the first year, and volunteers adapted to some of the worst weather of the season. Some of the tasks included yard work, chores, gutter cleaning, brush removal, haul offs, minor repairs, and even cookie making.

Teams of two or three individuals were assigned a Neighbor-In-Need task and were sent out to complete the task. 100 percent of all donations received are used for Christmas for kids.

Most recently, residents could call the Community and Conference Center for an appointment during a two-day event Nov. 6-7, 2009. Several of the Neighbor-in-Need tasks were sent to us by friends or concerned residents who knew of someone in need. In all, 34 tasks were accomplished in 2009.

The highly motivated employees who participated in the event in 2009 included organizer Michael Rupe, cookie maker Jill Hoffman, food support chief Chef Jerry James, Tommy Lee, Kathryn Swicegood, Palla Godsey, Ann Flint, Cathy Knight, Jim Hammerlund, Ken Sanford, Bob Bennett, Sheila Koelber, Abby Julian, Lou Watkins, Jill Barnes, Rick Reiss, Sean Thompson, Celia Whitesett, Shelia Walden, and Mary DeWolf.
