Budget in forefront for Fairfield Glade

By Clayta Richards / crichards@crossville-chronicle.com

The 2010 budget is occupying the attention of Fairfield Glade Community Club management this month. They are hoping to finish for a Nov. 10 town hall meeting, when they will present the proposed budget to members. General Manager Harvey Hoffman, at the Thursday board meeting, said the board will then meet to consider and make possible implementation of members' suggestions, before the Nov. board meeting, when the budget is expected to be approved.

Committees

ACC — Ernie Poland

Single family dwellings — 46 (2 cancellations, net 44)

No manufactured or mobile homes

Under construction — 71

Completed — 65

Golf — Pat Gruet

Gruet was very complimentary to Director of Golf Steve Kraft and the grounds crew for the excellent shape of the course, in spite of the rain, during the POETS Fall Tournament. The tournament was a sell-out.

Steep grades on the courses are being evaluated for safety concerns.

Bob McCone will head up a campaign to train golf representatives in CPR, since a need is sensed to increase that capability on the golf courses.

Gruet congratulated the club on a recent mention in Golf Digest. All five of the Glade's courses were listed.

Lakes — Mark Richie

Fish stocking is completed on the lakes, and the minnow hatchery/restocking program continues to save the club many dollars.

The fish farming project is underway at Heatherhurst. This program, too, is expected to save the club a lot of expense in restocking the lakes with game fish. The project is currently trying to grow small mouth bass for restocking.

A manual of "lake etiquette" will be produced by the committee, to be shared with lake dwellers.

Departments:

Fire — Jim Etzel

Forms are being completed as requested for the ISO-rating inspection to occur sometime next summer.

Etzel reported the Firefighters Banquet was a great success. The two firefighters who rescued Bob Kennedy from a housefire were honored as firefighters of the year. They are Dane Bryant and Woody Geisler.

Public Safety — Charlie Seiber

November activity:

Radar — 30 hours

Citations — 4

Arrests — 6

Ambulance assists — 43

Accidents with injury — 1

Accidents without injury — 8

ACC violations — 2

There have been numerous reports of identify theft in the Glade. Seiber warned residents to never give out their social security numbers.

Controller — Regina Welch

The controller continues to work on the 2010 budget.

The club had $6.7 million total cash at the end of September, with $3 million in unrestricted operating cash.

Delinquent accounts found 1,400 belonging to individual members, and 900 belonging to investors (those owning 10 or more lots), for a total of 2,300 at the end of September.

Fire — Howard Robb

9/04 — Peavine and Woodgate, EMS assist LZ

9/10 — 103 Shore Ln., smoke scare

9/15 — Cheshire Terr., vehicle accident

9/19 — 197 Markham Ln., water main break

9/29 — 62 Inwood Terr., smoke scare

9/11 — Fire department meeting

Miscellaneous:

9/02 — Training tower on going

9/04 — Last pancake breakfast set up for the year

9/05 — Pancake breakfast for the year

Community Services — Jeff Warren

Work continues on Dartmoor Dam, said Warren. Bids will be opened on Dec. 6 for the work on the spillway.

Leaf pickup begins Nov. 9. Bags should weigh no more than 50 lbs. and should contain only leaves. Bags not complying will be left on the street.

Operations — Tommy Lee

Reports:

Community and Conference Center

Attendance in September 2009

Pool Daily Average, 92

Gym Daily Average, 14

Labor Day weekend brought in heavy traffic, but the overall decrease in timeshare member traffic was not unexpected and is common this time of year. However, the average daily attendance for the gymnasium and pool was up slightly from 103 in 2008 to 106. In November, the new hours of operation will be 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Food and Beverage — Stonehenge Grille’s business continues to grow and it posted another month of positive net performance before allocation and depreciation. The Grilles’ new hours of operation, beginning Nov. 10, will be 11 a.m. till close every day, and nightly specials will continue.

Legends operations (dining, catering, kitchen and snack bar) came close to break-even as the food and beverage department continues to outperform budget and exceeds 2008’s performance by a net total $82K before depreciation.

The food and beverage department served 14,967 meals in the month of August.

Recreation — An aggressive budget for Dartmoor Marina accounted for $8K of the total $15K negative variance in expected revenues for the recreation division. Otherwise, the division’s financial performance was as expected, with almost every department.

Other — A new activities and events “hotline” is being prepared and will be introduced in early November. This automated service will provide up to the minute information on daily, weekly and monthly specials throughout the Operations Division. It will also promote upcoming events as well as connect the caller to a particular department for further details and/or to answer any questions regarding a particular event. It will also have a key specific to golf.

We are also working with the Chronicle in an attempt to provide a monthly, possible quarterly, calendar in the Glade Sun. It will be an insert separate from the "Bulletin" and can be unfolded and posted in a conspicuous place at home. It will have information on featured events, specials and relevant community news such as board and town hall meetings as well as scheduled community services such as leaf pick-up.

Golf — Steve Kraft

Paid rounds in September, 18,224; golfers served, 22,433.

PGA performance track figures for August:

National — 3,276

Tennessee — 2,728

Druid Hills — 4,205

Dorchester — 5,318

Heatherhurst — 11,412

Stonehenge — 4,540

"We're still exceeding golf courses in Tennessee and the nation," said Kraft.

He thanked Chet Weeks for the fine showing with the POETS tournament, which had 146 starting play, and 144 that finished, in spite of the weather.

Stonehenge closes on Nov. 9 and reopens in the spring on March 1.

The Christmas sale will be in the community center in early December.

Glenn Harper complimented Kraft on keeping the budget losses reigned in to only $8,000, considering the economy and all the rain.
