2009 Fall schedule released for Lifetime Learning classes

By Sally Brown, Ralph Gigante and Eileen Metzger / Sun contributors

The Manhattan Project kicks off our first of 18 Lifetime Learning classes for our 2009 fall classes. Learn the secret about the atomic bomb project from start to finish. When did it begin? Who was involved? Why was it such a secret? What was the outcome? Richard Hoglund will talk about this secret project Sept. 14 through Nov. 2.

Researching your family history? Stuck on how to get started? Sign up for a class on genealogy being taught by Joyce Rorabaugh. Joyce will show you how to get started, where to find records, and how to use the Internet. Class size is limited to 12 students and there is an extra fee involved – it's Sept. 14 to Oct. 19.

Rounding out our classes on Monday is "Economics in Three Easy Lessons." Financial Planning? Dealings? Management of Income? Government? Confusing, yes, but our instructor for this course is Don Reis. Don is a former businessman, lawyer, and government regulator who will take you on a fun and informative whirlwind tour of basic economics to help you make sense of confusing terms and times, classes run Oct. 5-19.

Tuesday classes starts off on Sept. 15 with "Tennessee Around Us." Come and learn about the state where we reside. Hear about its geology, history, and economy, along with other topics of special interest. Jim Taylor will conduct this class Sept. 15 through Oct. 27. This is a great class for new residents. Even yet, this is an outstanding class for those of us who have lived in the area for awhile. An extra fee is involved.

Tae Kwon Do “foot-fist-way,” one of our favorite classes from last year is back. As with many other arts, Tae Kwon Do combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, meditation and philosophy. Our instructor, Ralph Gigante, has taught this course for several years at a YMCA. Proceed at your own pace — you need not be a great athlete to take part. All you need is the “Spirit to Try.” Sept. 22-Oct. 27.

Hospice of Cumberland County: Living Life to the Fullest closes out our Tuesday classes. Stevie Naids, will conduct this one-day class, which is being presented on one of two dates: Sept. 15 or Oct. 27. The class will be a lecture and discussion on understanding hospice and how it relates to the community and family member of those who are terminally ill.

Lifetime Learning Task Force has been sponsoring these fall classes since 1993. Make a note on your calendar that registration will be on Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 2-3 p.m., at St. Francis Church. Lifetime Learning information booklets will be ready for distribution in mid-July. Enrollment is open to any Fairfield Glade resident and to all members of participating churches.
