Tom Eckert is a winner in Tennessee Watercolor Society Show

By Foy and Mildred Sperring / Sun contributors

Tom Eckert, Pleasant Hill artist, has been selected a winner in the ongoing exhibition at the Tennessee Watercolor Society’s biennial show in Knoxville. Eckert, one of 60 entrants accepted out of a field of 218 artists, entered his “Granddad’s Horseshoes” and was chosen for a $500 cash award. There were 15 awards ranging from the $2,500 Purchase Award to several $300 cash prizes.

Another local artist, Le Voss, was also accepted into the show and it was her fifth entry. Her art was titled “Hydrangeas.” Voss resides in Fairfield Glade and is an active member and past president of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade.

The juried show, the 31st for the statewide organization launched in 1971, was judged by Cheng-Khee Chee, AWS, NWS, internationally renowned artist, lecturer and teacher. He also conducted a workshop while visiting the show.

Eckert is a member of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade and CACE. He has been painting on and off for 43 years, ranging from watercolor to oil to pencil and his newest interest, acrylic abstract. Instruction has included Guy Slover (one year), Gifford Nicolaides, Joseph Fettingis and David Guidera. Workshops include Pat Aube Gray, Bobbie Brown Marsh, Bill Leonard, Daniel Blakeman, Elizabeth Ellison, Nancy McDonald, Pam Pate and Isabel Cohn. Eckert’s work may be found in several galleries and private collections throughout the U.S.

The Tennessee Watercolor Society is an exhibition organization with a show sponsored every other year. It has a statewide membership of more than 250. The juried exhibitions rotate around the state through five regions. For complete information, visit the Web site: TnWS.org. The Web site has on display a huge full color showing of 2006 Exhibition award winning entries from some of Tennessee’s finest artists. Co-chairs for the 2008 Exhibition and Workshop are Kay Yazdi and Harriet Howell.

The Exhibition may be visited at the Emporium Center, 100 South Gay St. After it closes Friday, July 25, the show, in part, will travel to The Magical Muse Gallery, 123 West Broad St. in Cookeville, Aug. 1-30. A total of 25 artists’ works (including Eckert’s) will be exhibited in Cookeville. For information, call the gallery at (931) 349-2847. Admission for the shows is free and the public is cordially invited.
