Stark, Hartman, Smith, Vallem claim "Rally for the Cure" title

By Deni Selvig / Sun contributor

The temperatures at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning were extremely chilly. But that did not deter the 90 ladies who came out to Heatherhurst to “Rally for the Cure” on the Brae. Most of us were decked out in pink and bundled for the elements. Happily, things warmed up nicely as the morning wore on.

The #7 hole on the Brae was our rally hole this year and quite a few of us collected pink ribbon balls for landing our tee shots on the green. Betty Jackson claimed an Adams 3-wood for her first-place closest-to-the-pin shot. Pearl Verba was at second-place.

Our format for the day was “two best net balls.” Claiming first-place honors was the team of Anna Stark, Molly Hartman, Jean Smith, and Jacque Vallem. In second place were Marty King, Sophie Nahod, Mary Manley, and Judy Reintsema. Third place went to the team of Mary Runfeldt, Mary Beth Stiglin, Sandy Fraser, and Janet Bond. Fourth place was nabbed by Shirley Green, Barb DesBiens, Mary Eva Demet, and Penny Symington. The team of Susan Summers, Phyllis Molnar, Murrel Reigle, and Eva Day took fifth place. And coming in at sixth place were Dorothy Roise, Joan Radcliffe, Sue Orris, and Sue Anderson.

Steve Kraft donated a lovely new golf bag, for which we raised an additional $150 for Komen for the Cure in a raffle. The winning number delivered the bag to Penny Symington.

Thanks to all the ladies who supported this year’s Rally for the Cure. A special thanks to Steve Kraft, Jeff Houston, Jeremy Jones and the staff at Heatherhurst who provided invaluable assistance. And, thanks to all those who contributed door prizes, including the Fairfield Glade Community Club and the Women’s 18-Hole League. Hugs and kisses to Kermit Selvig and Ray Nadolny from their wives for manning the rally hole! And we certainly cannot forget the ladies who made the yummy cookies — thank you all.

We hope to see all of you at next year’s rally and encourage those of you who weren’t there this year to join us in 2009.
