Men's 18-Hole Golf League kicks season off with breakfast

By Tom Herman / Sun contributor

The Men’s 18-Hole Golf League held their annual kickoff breakfast and meeting at the Druid Hills Golf Course on Wednesday, April 30. The attendees were welcomed by league president Mark Carle, and they represented over 75 percent of the membership.

Steve Kraft, director of golf for Fairfield Glade, was introduced after the buffet breakfast was served. Kraft once again provided information on the total number of rounds played at the Glade courses; the total number for April is expected to be over 1,000 rounds more this year with the addition of Stonehenge. Other items Kraft commented on was the difficulty of the maintenance department in maintaining the courses and staying out of the way of the golfers, the length of the Glade courses being now over 18 miles of golf holes and there are a total of 117 leagues playing with 369 golf carts. We have a new golf pro, Dawn Griffin, dividing her time between Druid and Dorchester. She is currently offering a six-week clinic for eight ladies.

The big news on April 22 was that for the first time, carts were allowed off the cart path at Stonehenge on 11 holes, except for the par threes, holes 8, 12 and 15. The big problem on hole 8 is the drainage ditch on the right side and a need for reconstruction before carts are able to navigate the fairway safely. The other biggie mentioned by Kraft is that we are now able to take carts into the parking lot at Stonehenge!

Both Mark and Rich Haycox, the new B-league vice president, welcomed all the new members to both of the leagues with 18 out of 81 being new in the A-league and 14 out of 49 being new in the B-league. They also welcome back the returning 98 “Old Timers.” All new league members are encouraged to contact their team captains for the league Web sites, or go to the Fairfield Glade Golf Web site to obtain information about their perspective league. In the A-league, all weekly team scores will be posted by Mark Carle for the day of play. We now have five days of match play in both leagues, with the addition of Stonehenge to our schedules, and hopefully a total of five scores can now be posted for weekly team play in the A-league. The same weekly competition rules will apply for team play whether four or five scores are posted, with a net score of two over par being recorded if the number is less than required number of players.

Both of the leagues would like to welcome all the returning veterans and especially the 32 newcomers. There is much hope that you will have a very successful and enjoyable fun-packed summer season. May all your drives be straight and long down the middle and all of your putts be center cup! See you next Wednesday, May 7, for the season opener on the Dorchester Golf Course.
