Kelley named to Visually Impaired Support Group board

By Ken Steadman / Sun contributor

The Visually Impaired Support Group of Cumberland County, TN, Inc. (VIS Group) elected Billie Kelley to the board of directors at a recent meeting. Kelley started a low vision support group in Fairfield Glade in 2007, with about 20 members.

Kelley commented, "I kept waiting for someone to start a group and was unaware of the one in Crossville. I am very pleased to serve on this board and help carry out their mission. This is exactly what I have been looking for. I intend to keep the group in Fairfield as long as there is interest. However, I will encourage them to join the VIS Group so that we can all obtain the same goals."

The mission of the VIS Group is to improve the lives of the blind and visually impaired in Cumberland County through education, communication, transportation, closed-circuit television units, support group meetings, and socializing.

President Jerry Hearndon stated, "We feel very fortunate to have Billie serve on our board. We look forward to the interest and enthusiasm she can offer. She can speak first hand about the needs of visually impaired persons."

Kelley will serve through Aug. 31, 2009, with other members of the board, President Jerry Hearndon, Vice President Joyce Lignar, Secretary Margery Finch, Treasurer Barbara Dorgelo, Tom Amann, Tom Bristow, Glenn Davenport, Ron Likens, Ken Steadman, Donna Taylor, and Jan Waldrop.

The VIS Group meets the second Thursday of each month at First United Methodist Church in Crossville at 9:30 a.m. The first hour is for business and new member/guest introductions, and the second hour is set aside for guest speakers. Use the Webb St. entrance to the church.

All visually impaired persons are encouraged to join the VIS Group to help improve their lives. Call Hearndon at 484-2237 for more information.
