The Fairfield Glade Sportsman Club hosted the third annual Super-Shoot-on-the-Mountain April 19 for 77 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) shooters from four Tennessee trapshooting programs.
Participating schools included the Arlington High School Trappers from East Memphis with five squads, Knox County with three squads, one squad from the Warren County 4-H program and Cumberland County, comprising of shooters from both Cumberland County High School and Stone Memorial High School, with five squads.
A squad consists of five shooters with each shooter firing at 100 targets.
Six squads competed in the varsity division (high school student with one year high school shooting experience), two in the junior varsity division (high school student with no high school experience), three in the advanced intermediate division (grades 6-8 with one year experience), one in the entry intermediate division (grades 6-8 with no experience) and two squads in the rookie division (grades 3-5, shooting experience does not apply).
The Arlington Trappers made the 300-mile trip a day early on Friday with 26 shooters, plus coaches, parents and other team supporters totaling about 70 people and, like last year, they took home most of the awards.
In the varsity division, the Trappers placed first, second and fifth. The first-place squad with a team total of 432X500 was led by Jarett Spegele with a 91X100 followed by Drew Reed (90), Josh Sexton (89), Matt Lollar (88) and Eric Bence with 74 broken targets.
The second place squad totaled 418. Cody Cochran led with a 91 followed by Ethan Kish (89), Keaton Leving (85), Brandon Barker (84) and Curt Robinson with 69. The Trappers' fifth-place squad with a 387 included Cody Cardile with an 87, Cody Magness (81), Seth Harrod (78), Jacob Leggett (71) and Meredith Smith with 70.
Third place in varsity went to Cumberland County with a 393 total.
All-state shooter Keisha Smith anchored this squad with an 88, followed by Jacob Jarrett (83), Amanda Server (79), Kayla Bess (77) and Cody Beaty with a 66.
Knox County took fourth place with a 388. High score was an 84 by George Johnson.
Sixth place also went to Cumberland County with a 331.
Jacob Jerrolds led with a 76 followed by Nick Sebok (74), Cody Hilker (68), Spencer Music (64) and Wilson Tanksley (49).
The Trappers had the only two entries in the junior varsity division. The winning team firing a 364 was David Lindsey (84), Cameron Scheynaildre (83), Conrad Lewis (70), Evan Kelly (66) and Jonathon Scott (61). In second with a 250 total were Matt Rose (68), Chris Horton (59), Jonathon Ammons (48), Selby Edwards (39) and Blake Dickerson (36).
Cumberland County placed first in the advanced intermediate division with a 316. Squad members were Denny Cope (70), Logan Johnson (66), Luke Kemmer (64), Jimmy Wattenbarger (62) and Patrick South (54).
Second place went to Knox County with a 294. This squad was anchored by William Raines who tied for high score of the event with a 91 – an excellent score for this division.
Warren County 4-H took third place with a 272. High individual score in this squad was a 78 posted by Nicholas Cantrell.
Cumberland County was the only squad shooting in the entry intermediate division composed of Terryl Potter (76), David Stallworth (69), Jared South (67), and Joel and Mathew Ilgenfritz at 62 and 46 each, for a total of 320.
The winning score in the rookie division was from Knox County with a 266. Top individual score was a 71 posted by Nathan Ford.
Cumberland County was runner-up with a 262. Squad members were Andrew Smith (76), Hunter Garrett (50), Mason Hill and Nathan Wattenbarger (47 each) and Sara Stallworth with a 42.
Arlington coach Kurt Simons, who organized the Trappers just two years ago, has already taken his charges to the summit of SCTP trapshooting by winning the SCTP National Championship in the Junior Varsity Division last year in Sparta, IL. Simons is to be commended for running a model SCTP with dedicated and disciplined shooters supported by devoted parents.
Cumberland County coach Kim Chamberlin stated the chilly, gusting wind conditions kept all the scores down. Chamberlin feels that his team will be ready for the May 3 regional meet here with Warren County 4-H, with the winner qualifying for state competition later in the summer.
Special thanks to Maria Server and Kathy Stallworth for serving lunch.
