Letters to the editor (published May 1, 2008)

Some time ago, we had a small mishap at the car wash on Peavine Rd. Our daughter, who was visiting us and who was unfamiliar with the area, turned too sharply in exiting to Peavine and our car got hung up over the culvert with no traction. Several nice people stopped to see if they could be of help. However, we needed a tow truck to move the car. Some thoughtful person notified security and an officer arrived promptly. His name is Mike Ingram and I want to thank him and commend him for his helpful and very courteous manner. He called the tow truck for us, and stayed with us until we were safely on our way. We are indeed fortunate to have such friendly and helpful neighbors and security officers.

It seems that problems come in bunches, for last Friday in the midst of that heavy thunderstorm, I had a flat tire while driving on Peavine. I managed to find a spot where I could pull off, and my husband came and was starting to change the tire. Just then a nice young couple stopped and the young man changed the tire for us — and wouldn't take anything for this help. Isn't it great to live in an area where there are so many kind and helpful people? What a blessing!

Fairfield Glade

For several years, Fairfield Glade residents have been asking, begging, pleading for a dog park where their animals could spend a sociable time with others of their approximate size. Phone calls were made, letters written, promises suggested, and still we wait, somewhat impatiently I fear, for the board to do something.

There were several objections, mainly insurance problems, but nothing has been really done to bring a dog park to reality. The number of dogs in the communithy is growing. They really need a place to exercise off a leash. Dogs are much happier when they have enjoyed a social time with other dogs. That is why wild dogs tend to run in packs. Just like their human masters, they tend to be miserable without others to visit with.

There is a large open field that is kept mowed by the community mowers, just behind the little administrative building on Peavine. There is a driveway, street lights, a parking area and no neighbors to really bother. All it needs is a fence surrounding the field and one down the middle to separate larger dogs from smaller ones. A couple of benches inside the compounds would provide visiting spaces for owners who must attend their dogs while they run. A garbage can next to the entrance will collect droppings, in baggies, of course, cutting out potential odor and/or germs.

Each person is responsible for his/her own dog, their behavior, water and waste. Naturally, antognistic dogs should not come to the park. We don't really want dog fights.

Please call members of our board of directors and encourage them to move on this sorely needed space. I feel sure the golfers would be happier when they aren't faced with the results of careless owners. If they "forget" to clean up after their dog, at the dog park, others present will offer them a bag and/or reminder.
