Traffic problems loom for Peavine Road and I-40 overpass

By Ed Lewis / Sun contributor

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has announced intermittent closures of Peavine Rd. at I-40 during the week of April 21 to allow for movement of heavy equipment used in the construction of pilings for the expanded bridge over the interstate highway. Motorists are cautioned to "allow some extra time for travel in the area" but specific dates, times and durations of the delays were not announced.

Several detour routes have been available in the past when Peavine Rd. was temporarily closed, two of which involve the use of Chestnut Hill Rd., the primary alternate route. However, Chestnut Hill is closed between Peavine and Shorty Barnes Rd. east of the bridge construction. This closure is due to the installation of a new bridge on Chestnut Hill north of I-40 and west of Shorty Barnes Rd.

Chestnut Hill is a continuation of First St. in Crossville and begins at Peavine Rd. between Route 70 and I-40. The Cumberland County Roads Department reports the bridge construction on Chestnut Hill is expected to be completed in early May.

The accompanying map is to assist motorists traveling to and from the Glade when Peavine Rd. is temporarily closed.

Only two alternate routes will be available during the presence of the heavy equipment at the bridge. From Peavine Rd., one option is to travel east or west to Cherry Branch or Shorty Barnes roads, south to Chestnut Hill Rd., east and south to Crab Orchard, and west on I-40 or Hwy. 70 to Crossville.

The other option is the use of Westchester Rd. in the eastern part of the Glade, south to Chestnut Hill and continuing on Chestnut Hill to Crab Orchard, and west on I-40 or Hwy. 70 to Crossville.
