Super Senior women come in second at Southern Sectional Senior USTA Tennis matches

By Bev Schwind / Sun contributor

Eligible to represent the state at the senior southern sectionals is a real honor. Eight hundred players represented over 7,000 players competed in the nine southern states 60s and 70s division. The action took place in Columbus, GA. The 30 clay courts at the Cooper Creek Park was the sight of much of the action.

The action on the court was spectacular with many team matches decided on a single court in a match tiebreaker. One of these Tennessee matches was Sydney Woodlee and Bev Schwind, who won an 11-9 tiebreaker against Alabama to put their team in the final.

The Knoxville Women’s 70 team includes players from Oak Ridge, Kingston, Knoxville and Bev from Fairfield Glade.

Teams must win in their state to be eligible to play at the sectional level. For the super senior 70s, this was a National Tournament for the 60s — they will play again in Mobile, AL.

Two Fairfield men’s teams represented the state in the men’s 60 age group 3.5 and the men’s 70 age 3.0 division.

The men who enjoyed the event were Dan Tingle, Jim Mansfield, Ron Edwards, Don DeeBerry, Larry Dove, Roger Mauer, Frank Edwards, Colby Ardis, Jim Smith, Hank Bartos, Ed Steele, Joe Peterson, Ron Reynolds, and Don Jordon. It was a fun time with the men and the wives cheering for one another and having dinner together in the evening.

The women’s 70 team, captained by Charlotte Rackley of Knoxville, were finalist and brought home their trophy.

The tennis magazine Southern Tennis 2008, shows pictures of Pat Tingle of Fairfield Glade, who is named honorable mention volunteer of the year; Lucy Bertram, as Junior Team Tennis Tournament of the Year; and Bev Schwind of the 70s state winners. Many other Fairfield tennis players were listed in the magazine and their rankings.
