Bishop honored for veterans funeral service

Terry Johnson, commander of the Veterans Honor Guard, pins a "600 Funerals" pin on Carl Bishop. Waiting to receive his "100 Funerals" pin is Forrest Powell. The occasion was the 1,427th funeral at which the unit provided military honors. Bishop is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who saw service in Vietnam and Desert Storm. He joined the unit in 2003 and regularly participates in over 100 funerals a year. He is a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5025 and Disabled American Veterans chapter 32, both in Crossville. Powell is a Navy veteran, retiring after 24 years of active duty, including service during the Vietnam era. His father served in the Navy during World War II. His son is a 20-year U.S. Navy veteran, with service during the Gulf War. The three generations represent 50 years of military service. Powell is a member of American Legion Post 135 in Cookeville
