PATCHES OF LIFE: The drama

By Bev Schwind / Sun contributor

I am thankful for all the churches that do dramas during the holiday seasons. There are many television productions but, to me, I enjoy watching people I see at the grocery store or church or other places taking part in the church production. I have been involved in church productions for many years, and I never tire of the presentation of the gospel as seen by other writers.

Our son was in one of the productions when we were in Ohio. He played the part of Jesus. I was in the choir loft and the production was going on in front of the choir. I remember as they were bringing Jesus before Pilot and the crowd cried out, “crucify Him,” the feeling that came over me. I was so into the production and the events and seeing them mock my son I wanted to scream,"No." The scene shook me. I could not imagine what the real mother of the real Jesus must have endured.

This year, for the fourth time, I will be in our original Easter drama called "God Will Make a Way." Just as much as I like watching the dramas, it is different when you are actively in the play. For me the story sinks into me and I find myself in the city of Jerusalem at a time of much violence and hate. I get excited when Jesus heals people or ministering angels come to Him. I cry in sorrow at the crucifixion scene and cry with joy as the stone rolled away reveals and empty tomb. The people in the cast are different, too, as they feel the story come to life in them. The music and chorus and Christ appearing in Glory may close the production, but the cast is not the same. They have re-enacted the most important event in history. We hope the audience has some take-home inspiration.

Consider going to one of the Easter productions being offered at the various churches this

Easter season, and don’t be afraid to sign up for a part next time. Have a blessed Resurrection Sunday.
