LOCAL VIDEO: Community Center opens to great fanfare

The Fairfield Glade Community Club (FGCC) passed another milestone on Monday. The $6.5 million Community and Conference Center was opened to great fanfare as dignitaries such as U.S. Congressman Lincoln Davis, state Representative Eric Swafford, Crossville Mayor J.H.   • Lake Dartmoor is home to river otters
    River otters have recently been reported on Lake Dartmoor. To some, their presence is a threat to fishing success, while to others it is a chance to see one of Tennessee's most entertaining animals. Because of this disparity, trout stocking on four Fairfield Glade lakes was delayed this spring to evaluate the otter situation.

  • Williams achieves Life Master status
    The annual Gatlinburg Regional Duplicate Bridge Tournament, the largest (most well attended) duplicate bridge tournament in the world, was held April 14-20 in the Gatlinburg Conference Center.

  • Curry, Brown named Lions Club's students of the month
    Scott Alan Curry, son of Tambra and Norman Curry of Crossville, has been selected as the Cumberland County High School Student of the Month. Curry is an extremely busy young man who has participated in a wide variety of activities in his high school career.

    Zachary Brown, son of Nichole and Chris Brown of Crossville, has been selected by Stone Memorial High School as the Student of the Month for April.

    Sixty-three members of the Women's Nine Hole League enjoyed each other's company and an excellent meal at Legends at Druid Hills on April 28. Everyone enjoyed the menu selected by the social co-chairwomen, Marlene Smith and Claire Sisson.

    Men's 9-Hole Golf League orientation meeting was held at the Community Center, Monday, April 28, at 10:30 a.m. We had the best attendance ever, with 64 regulars and 42 subs in attendance.

    The Men’s 18-Hole Golf League held their annual kickoff breakfast and meeting at the Druid Hills Golf Course on Wednesday, April 30. The attendees were welcomed by league president Mark Carle, and they represented over 75 percent of the membership.

    Good Samaritan Society – Fairfield Glade is pleased to announce the date of the random selection event for senior housing with services. The event will take place Wednesday, June 25 at the new Fairfield Glade Community Center.

  • Kelley named to Visually Impaired Support Group board
    The Visually Impaired Support Group of Cumberland County, TN, Inc. (VIS Group) elected Billie Kelley to the board of directors at a recent meeting. Kelley started a low vision support group in Fairfield Glade in 2007, with about 20 members.

  • Parking available to visit veterans office
    Two parking spaces are now available for veterans visiting the Veterans Service Office at 380 Thurman Ave. The parking spaces are on the east side of the courthouse. This is especially helpful to those veterans and spouses with disabilities.

  • Recipient receives funds to pay medical expenses from Thrivent Financial
    On April 10, John and Rachael Severson, of Crossville, received $1,500 from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans to pay medical expenses. The total of funds raised was $7,874, which includes the $1,500 from Thrivent.

  • Arlington High School dominates Super Shoot at Sportsman Club
    The Fairfield Glade Sportsman Club hosted the third annual Super-Shoot-on-the-Mountain April 19 for 77 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) shooters from four Tennessee trapshooting programs.

    Fairfield Glade is no longer under a water restriction. That announcement was made at the Fairfield Glade Community Club (FGCC) board meeting on Thursday by Everett Bolin of the Crab Orchard Utility District. "We'll be looking at it month-to-month," said Bolin.

    Some time ago, we had a small mishap at the car wash on Peavine Rd. Our daughter, who was visiting us and who was unfamiliar with the area, turned too sharply in exiting to Peavine and our car got hung up over the culvert with no traction.

    For several years, Fairfield Glade residents have been asking, begging, pleading for a dog park where their animals could spend a sociable time with others of their approximate size.

  • Traffic problems loom for Peavine Road and I-40 overpass
    The Tennessee Department of Transportation has announced intermittent closures of Peavine Rd. at I-40 during the week of April 21 to allow for movement of heavy equipment used in the construction of pilings for the expanded bridge over the interstate highway. Motorists are cautioned to "allow some extra time for travel in the area" but specific dates, times and durations of the delays were not announced.

  • Women's Nine-Hole League has some new members
    Robbie Corbin, membership chairman for the Women's Nine Hole League, met with new members for an orientation on Tuesday. They gathered at Bogey's for a breakfast meeting and discussed the upcoming Nine-Hole season and the procedure for signing in and out.

  • Super Senior women come in second at Southern Sectional Senior USTA Tennis matches
    Eligible to represent the state at the senior southern sectionals is a real honor. Eight hundred players represented over 7,000 players competed in the nine southern states 60s and 70s division. The action took place in Columbus, GA. The 30 clay courts at the Cooper Creek Park was the sight of much of the action.

    Rosemary Cantrell, 79, of Fairfield Glade, TN, shot a hole-in-one at Dorchester Country Club on April 16, 2008.

    Sharon Peskett, 64, of 40 Renwick Dr., Fairfield Glade, TN, shot a hole-in-one on April 17, 2008, at Heatherhurst Country Club, Crag course.

  • Lloyd elected to WV Sports Hall of Fame
    Fairfield Glade resident Earl Lloyd, who left West Virginia State College to make history in the National Basketball Association, has been elected to the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

  • The “Dimpled Globe” awards for 2007
    This is the third annual announcement of the coveted “Dimpled Globe Awards (DGA).” The dimpled globe of note is a golf ball, chosen as symbolic framing for award recipients in keeping with the significance of golf to Cumberland County, the Golf Capitol of Tennessee.

    This letter is in response to Gerry Miller’s letter to the editor regarding the fate of our wastewater treatment facility and our sewer service. The members of your board of directors are committed to following all Fairfield Glade Community Club covenants and restrictions, Cumberland County, the state of Tennessee, and the federal government’s rules, regulations and laws. It is a shame that one individual and an extremely small number of members have taken it upon themselves to act independently as your representatives with no authorization from you, management, or the board of directors.

  • Glade Hiking Group to hike Burnt Mill Bridge Loop
    Friday, April 11, the Fairfield Glade Hiking Group is returning to the Big South Fork area to hike the Burnt Mill Bridge Loop. This is a 4.3-mile hike that is rated moderate. This loop parallels the Clear Fork River, and if we are lucky we could see a lot of wildflowers such as trillium, hepatica, trout lily, and toothwort.
