“Caring in the Cumberlands” 2009 Caregiver Workshop & Home Health Care Expo is “awesome”

The first community forum sponsored by Fairfield Glade Resident Services (FGRS) last October attracted more than 300 attendees and garnered enthusiastic comments. That forum featured an overview of safety and security services available for Glade residents.   • Three candidates to run for Fairfield Glade Board of Directors seats
    The Fairfield Glade Election Committee has announced that three candidates have filed applications for this year's Board of Directors election. Deadline for filing was Friday, June 26. Two Property Owner Directors At-Large will be elected this year.

  • Board approves dam repair funds
    During a special called board meeting on June 15, board members approved the $389,000 expenditure to "fix" Dartmoor Dam. This information came as Fairfield Glade Community Club (FGCC) President Charlie Woll opened the monthly board meeting Thursday morning, June 25

  • Rally for the cure creates a 'sea of pink'
    On June 16, the Women’s 18-Hole League hosted a “Rally for the Cure.” 91 ladies were decked out in pink and ready to play on a very warm day. The game for the day was a team event in which the two best net balls on each hole were counted.

  • Dickinson receives Lindsey award
    The Fairfield Glade Lions Club schedules a special June dinner each year to install new officers and honor certain members for service. The Virginia Lindsey Leadership Award is one of these honors.

  • FG Lions install new set of officers for new year
    Past District Governor Keith Pontius was recently installed as president (King Lion) of the Fairfield Glade Lions Club along with all of his officers. Keith’s term starts July 1, 2009 and ends June 30, 2010.

  • Dan's Plans for Education Fans: Basic balanced budget passed by board
    Bread without the butter, cake without the icing, soup without the sandwich, baseball without the hot dog and Mom without the apple pie sum up the 2009-2010 Cumberland County School System budget unanimously passed by your Board of Education during our June 25 meeting.

  • Boat Float again a great success
    The day was warm and sunny as guests toured Lake St. George, then enjoyed a picnic supper and friendships at the FFG Hospice Auxiliary’s annual Boat Float and Barbecue on June 9. The auxiliary would like to thank all the captains for use of their pontoon boats and ticket printing by Paula Navarro of the Hospice office, as well as the many great sponsors.

  • GUEST COLUMN: County budget committee struggles
    The Budget Committee continues to grind toward a balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2009-2010. The Board of Education (BOE) and Director of Schools (DOS) submitted another recommended budget, in the required format with complete information, on June 19.

  • July 11 Big Band Dance at Community Center to celebrate America
    The Big Band Sound will feature a patriotic medley to honor America’s birthday, when it performs at the monthly dance at the Fairfield Glade Community Center on Saturday, July 11. The salute to the Red, White and Blue is scheduled for 7-10 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 per person.

  • FG Bass Club finishes tournaments 6 and 7
    Little Lake Catherine was the site of Fairfield Glade Bass Club's Tournament 6, with 25 fishermen participating. Lake Catherine gave up only 25 fish, but the quality and size of the fish was better than average.

  • Former Fire Chief 'on fire' at Knights Tournament
    When Dave Allstaedt left for the Knights of Columbus International Golf Tournament (June 18-19), he wasn’t thinking of winning this year. Things just weren’t going great this year. His wife lost her mother in March, he lost his dad in May and his golf game was in the sewer.

  • Annual budget show is sponsored by the Art Guild
    July 17-18 the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade will hold the annual Budget Show and Sale at the Plateau Creative Art Center, 451 Lakeview Dr. (off Peavine). This free exhibit gives the public a chance to buy original art work at a fraction of the price a gallery would charge. The Budget Show and Sale begins at 9 a.m. each day.

  • Royce and Ezelle are top guns at Sportsman Club
    Tom Royce of Dayton, TN won the singles and doubles events while Lake Tansi’s Jim Ezelle took home the handicap award at the club’s 4th Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) event of the year on June 20.

  • PATCHES OF LIFE: Clowns that cry
    It was a special end of the year celebration at the Christian School for the special needs children. The year was 1969 and my partner and I were enjoying doing fun shows as clowns and watching people laugh. It was not an easy decision to go to the school as my partner had experienced the birth and short life of a Downs syndrome child.

    The Manhattan Project kicks off our first of 18 Lifetime Learning classes for our 2009 fall classes. Learn the secret about the atomic bomb project from start to finish. When did it begin? Who was involved? Why was it such a secret? What was the outcome? Richard Hoglund will talk about this secret project Sept. 14 through Nov. 2.

  • Garden and kitchen tour scholarship fundraiser is a huge success
    The first annual Garden and Kitchen Tour presented by the FG Ladies Club was not only a sell-out but an enormous success as well. All the kitchens and gardens toured were extraordinarily lovely. Delicious treats were served at each kitchen and blooms were in abundance in all the beautiful gardens. Many excellent ideas were garnered by the tour participants.

    The Cumberland County Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) sent four squads (5 shooters per squad) plus four alternates to the Tennessee State Trapshooting Championships held at the Montgomery County Shooting Complex in Southside, TN on May 28-31.

    With a capacity crowd packed into the courthouse last Monday night, the monthly Commission meeting was the most interesting in a long time. As I am sure most of you have heard by now, the Smith Mountain Solutions, LLC (SMS) proposal to locate a “fly ash” (coal combustion products) landfill in Cumberland County was the 17th item on the agenda.

    As of the date I submitted this letter for publication, the Board has yet to point out any inaccuracies in the long range plan draft sent to them on May 6.

    In the recent article regarding the Board of Directors at FG rejecting the Long Range Plan, there was a comment made that was incorrect and I would like to clarify it.

  • Scrapbooking creates colorful memories for generations
    Scrapbooking is alive and well in Fairfield Glade. Not the scrapbooks that many of us put together when we were younger that now have brittle, yellow, pages — but scrapbooks that are made of archival quality materials and ones that will last.

  • Gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam visits the Glade
    Although it was a virtually unannounced visit, around 60 Fairfield Glade residents gathered at Legends to enjoy an early morning breakfast with Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam. Cumberland County Mayor Brock Hill accompanied the mayor, who is one of four already-announced Republican candidates for governor of Tennessee in the August 2010 election.

  • DAN'S PLANS FOR EDUCATION FANS: BOE courts and tracks facilities use agreement compromise
    The community use of school facilities discussion drags on. Public use of tennis, track and athletic fields at Cumberland County and Stone Memorial High Schools is clearly a hot button issue. The use of those facilities by the very folks who paid for them has been lately forbidden. Administrators have unilaterally and unanimously ruled.

  • Glade church to welcome O’Brien July 5
    Dr. Randall O’Brien, president of Carson-Newman College will speak on Sunday, July 5, at Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church, at all of the three worship services: 8 a.m., 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

  • Dartmoor Dam funds OK'd
    On Monday, June 15th the Board of Directors of the Fairfield Glade Community Club Inc. held a Special Meeting for the purpose of voting on a project to modify the Lake Dartmoor dam outlet system.

  • GUEST COLUMN: Budget committee meets with BOE and director of schools
    Last week’s Budget Committee meeting with the Board of Education (BOE) and Director of Schools (DOS) started off poorly and was less than productive. In February, the Budget Committee had asked the BOE to submit as proposed General Purpose School budget for Fiscal Year 2009-2010. We asked that it be submitted on or before June 5, 2009.

  • Caddies galore in Fairfield Glade
    Former Glade golf pro Kip Henley's recent success as a caddie on the PGA tour brought to mind another fine caddie with Glade ties. Jeff "Squeaky'' Medlen, whose mother still resides in the Glade, became well-known by caddying for a number of players, notably Nick Price, who won the PGA and British Open, among other tournaments.

  • $1M Shootout a big success
    The recent Hole-In-One Shootout, benefiting the Fairfield Glade Volunteer Fire Department, was a huge success! Nearly 300 contestants entered the qualifying rounds at Heatherhurst Golf Course, with 115 moving into the quarter finals and 22 into the semi finals.

  • Bucky Cantrell Championships 2009 finishes with success
    This year's Bucky Cantrell Clay Court Championships was a huge success, with a strong playing field coming from all parts of Tennessee as well as Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama.

  • 7th annual Wayne Benson Memorial Golf Tournament — May 9 — rained out
    A storm canceled the golf on May 9 for the seventh annual Wayne Benson Charity Golf Tournament, but a good time was had by all at the Fairfield Glade Methodist Church pavilion.
